© The Verden News Verden, Oklahoma October 18, 1912 January 6, 1834 ~ October 17, 1912 As we go to press [Thursday] we learn of the death of Joseph Hostick, at the home of his son Sherman in Verden. He had been ailing for about a year and gradually grew weaker and weaker until he answered the final summons at 10 o'clock Thursday morning, October 17. Deceased was 78 years of age and leaves three sons to mourn his loss; Frank of Laverty, J. W. of Elkhart, Ind. and Sherman of Verden. Arrangements for the funeral were not completed at this time, awaiting an answer to a telegram sent to his son at Elkhart. © The Verden News Verden, Oklahoma October 25, 1912 The funeral of Joseph Hostick was conducted from the residence of his son Sherman in Verden, Friday afternoon, October 18, by Rev John H. Scott of the M. E. church and the remains were laid to rest in the Verden cemetery. Deceased was born in Lebanon, Penn., in 1884 and passed away on Thursday, October 17, 1912. He has been ill for about a year and grew weaker and weaker until the end came last Thursday. Joseph Hostick was married to Miss Sarah Light in Erie, Michigan, in 1861, and to this union was born three boys and one girl. Mrs Hostick died in Erie, Michigan, in 1901, after which he came to Oklahoma and made his home with his son, where he spent the remainder of his life. © The Verden News Verden, Oklahoma 12 February 1954 April 27, 1866 ~ February 7, 1954 SHERMAN HOSTICK SERVICES HELD TUESDAY Services for Sherman Hostick, pioneeer resident of Verden, were conducted at the First Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 9. Chaplain Robert G. Hedrick of Muskogee Officiated, assisted by the pastor, Rev Tom Graham. Interment was in the Verden Cemetery with the Hansen Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Music was rendered by Mr and Mrs L. E. Seago and Mr and Mrs Floyd Adkisson who sang "Asleep In Jusus," "Beautiful Isle" and "Beyond the Sunset." Mrs Donald Brown was pianist. Casket bearers were Blake Britain of Tulsa; Ferris Petree of Okla. City; P. S. Kern of Anadarko; Roy Boevers, Harry Dodson and G. C. McVey. Honorary bearers were Claude Britain, E. W. Peters, J. W. Oswley and O. E. Nuernberger of Chickasha; Ross Hume of Anadarko, Dr G. M. McVey, Charles Heisler, C. W. Hamill, B. F. Loveless, John Kern, A. S. McVey, I. H. Bilbrey, Jess Talkington and R. H. Brown. Sherman Hostick was born in Erie, Michigan, April 27, 1866 and passed away at his home in Verden, Okla., February 7, 1954 at the age of 87 years, 8 months and 10 days, following a lengthy illness. He came to Oklahoma in 1887 settling near Anadarko. On August 16, 1894 he was united in marriage to Maud Lee McWhorter and to this union were born three children, one daughter passed away in infancy. He was "Boss-farmer" at the Methvin Institute and later at the Martinez Ranch. In 1906 he moved to Verden and was in the Real Estate and Insurance business until his retirement about twelve years ago. He served on the school board several years and was quite active in civic affairs. He was a charter member of the Verden Methodist Church, the Masonic and Modern Woodmen of America lodges. Those left to mourn his departure are: his wife, Mrs Maud Lee Hostick, Verden; one son, Albert B. Hostick, Huntsville, Arkansas; one daughter, Mrs Claudia Hansen, Tulsa, Okla.; one brother, Jay Hostick, Tompano Beach, Florida; one grandchild and four great grandchildren, also a host of other relatives and friends. Among the out of town relatives and friends attending the services were: Dr and Mrs Jerry Senter and sons, Jerry, Jr., and Michael of Austin, Texas; Albert Hostick, Huntsville, Arkansas; Miss Nancy Brice, Fayetteville, Arkansas; Mr and Mrs Paul Hansen, Mr and Mrs H. B. Senter, Mr and Mrs Bob Porch and Blake Britain, all of Tulsa; Mr and Mrs Newton Morria, Mr and Mrs Gordon Butler, Mr and Mrs Rasa Harman, Mrs Clark Boyles and son, Clark, Jr, Ferris and Hilbert Petree, Marvin Lamb, Mr Bradley and Zack Lang, all of Okla. City. Mr and Mrs Ernest Lamb, Enid; Mr and Mrs Tom Butler, Blanchard; Mrs Joe Hartin, Mrs Turner Cochran and daughter, Mrs Chinche Ross, Tuttle; Mr and Mrs Cuthbert Hafner, Minco; Mr and Mrs J. B. © The Verden News Verden, Oklahoma January 9, 1969 January 19, 1875 ~ January 2, 1969 HOSTICK SERVICES HELD Mrs Maud Lee Hostick, 93, passed away Thursday in Fort Worth, Texas. Funeral was held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the United Methodist Church in Verden. Mrs Hostick helped to establish many of the Methodist Churches in Oklahoma. Mr Sherman Hostick preceded her in death on Feb. 7, 1954. She is survived by one son, Albert B. Hostick of Boerne, Texas; one daughter, Claudia M. Koob, Fort Worth, Texas; one sister, Mrs Edna Wilson, Chickasha, and four great grandsons. Music was furnished by Elaine Watson, Juanita Miller, Virginia Hendricks, Gladys Dodson, accompanied by Iva Lee Broan at the piano. Pallbearers were Debs Patterson, Don Brown, Kenneth West, Alfred Schmidt, Roy Beauver and Clarence Warbiton. Rev A. B. Hickman officiated. Interment was in the Verden Cemetery under the direction of Hansen Funeral Home of Verden. |
