© The Verden News Verden, Oklahoma October 31, 1913 September 5, 1841 ~ October 25, 1913 Our entire community was saddened Saturday morning, October 25th, when they learned that Grandpa Harris had died at the home of his daughter, Mrs J. L. Daniel near Chickasha. Mr Harris was one of our most respected and loved men, and he had reached the ripe old age of 72 years. Deceased was born in Ohio, September 5th, 1841. He was married to Miss Olive Smith, October 14, 1867, to which union seven children were born, six of whom are still living to mourn his loss; they are Mrs J. L. Daniel and Mrs E. S. Shaw of Chickasha, Oscar D. Harris and Ed Harris of Cement, John Harris and Charley W. Harris of Newton, Kansas. Deceased had enjoyed the best of health until July last when complicated diseases set in. Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church in Verden by Rev P. F. Harman, Monday, October 27th. The remains were laid to rest in the Verden cemetery beside the loving wife who was laid to rest six years ago. A host of sorrowing friends extend their heartfelt sympathy to the family in their bereavement. We wish to express our sincere and heartfelt thanks to the kind friends and neighbors who so ably assisted us during the last sickness and sad death and burial of our father; for kind words of sympathy and floral offerings. © The Verden News Verden, Oklahoma January 9, 1908 December 25, 1855 ~ December 22, 1907 Olive C. Smith was born in Henry county, Iowa, December 25, 1855. Departed this life December 22, 1907, aged 56 years 11 months and 27 days. She was married to George W. Harris at Keokuk, Iowa in 1866. To this union seven children were born. Roy died in childhood, John, Oscar, Edward, Nettie, Alma and Charlie are still living. After living a number of years in Iowa and Kansas, they located on a farm 4 miles south of Verden, Okla., at which they were residing at the time of her death. In early life she became a member of the United Brethern church and ever after has devoted her life to her God and her family. Being an invalid for a number of years, she has always borne her sufferings with patience and fortitude which show how strong was her faith in a future home where pain and sufferings were unknown. |
© The Verden News Verden, Oklahoma August 29, 1941 March 5, 1870 ~ August 25, 1941 LAST RITES HELD AUG 28 FOR MR O. D. HARRIS Oscar D. Harris died at his home southwest of Verden at 900 a. m. on August 25, 1941, at the age of 71 years, 5 months and 20 days. He had been in ill health for several months. The funeral services were held at the Baptist Church, August 28 at 330 p. m. with Rev. C. W. Taylor officiating. Mr Harris was born in Ohio, March 5, 1870 but had lived south of Verden since 1903 on a farm. His wife, Martha E. Harris preceded him in death, May, 1933. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America. Surviving members of his family are two daughters, Mrs Ollie Teel, Lookeba, Mrs. Irma Murphy, Cement, nine grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Nettie Daniels and Mrs. Alma Shaw of Fayetteville, Arkansas. Interment was made in the Verden cemetery with Hansen Funeral Home in charge. |
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma April 2016 January 10, 1926 ~ April 29, 2016 Funeral service for Maxine E. “Grandma Maxine” Harris will be at 2:00 pm Tuesday, May 3, 2016 in the Laverty Baptist Church, Cement, Oklahoma with Rev. Greg Brooks, Marlow, Oklahoma officiating. Burial will be in the Verden Cemetery, Verden, Oklahoma under the direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home of Fletcher. *** Family will greet friends Monday evening, May 2, 2016 from 5pm until 7pm at the funeral home in Fletcher. *** Maxine E. Harris, 90 of Cement, passed away Friday, April 29, 2016 in an Oklahoma City hospital. She was born January 10, 1926 in Anadarko, Oklahoma to William Franklin and Lily Mae [Crumm] Trogdon. She married C.W. “Heavy” Harris on February 20, 1945 in Lawton. He passed away November 3, 2000. She went to work for Young’s Well Service in 1965 and worked there for over 20 years. She then went to work for Allstate Insurance as support personnel and worked there for over 20 years. At the time of her death she was working as a volunteer at Grady County Memorial Hospital in Chickasha, where she still drove herself weekly for the last four years. She was a member of the Laverty Baptist Church, where she was the church clerk and sang in the choir. She is survived by her children, Ronnie Harris and wife Sharon, Carolyn Cottrell and husband Gary, Bill Harris, her sister Vivian Hughes of Verden, a brother Glen Trogdon of Granola, KS, grandchildren, Paul and wife Theresa Cottrell, Kim and husband Craig Hubbard, Tracie and husband Waylon Koehler, Carla and husband John Nicholas and Lisa and husband Drue Van Schuyver. She is also survived by 14 great grandchildren, Shyla, Logan, Ryan, Tyler, Bradyn, Scotlyn, Levi, Austin, Jackson, Livia, Bryce, Brendan, Diamon, Kiara and a special friend Abbigale whom she picked up from school every day. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a grandson Cody Harris and daughter-in-law Marilyn Harris. Memorial contributions may be made to the Laverty Baptist Church in Cement, Oklahoma. |
Chickasha, Oklahoma June 2023 April 12, 1931 ~ June 1, 2023 A funeral service for Syble Inez Harris, 92, of Chickasha, will be held in the Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel. Syble Inez [Morrow Harris was born April 12, 1931 in Caddo County, north of Anadarko, Oklahoma to William John Morrow and Rosa Lee [Tabors] Morrow. She passed from this life Thursday, June 1, 2023 in Chickasha, Oklahoma. Syble spent her early growing up years in the Amber area, then a few years in Agawam, and would be the first in her family to finish high school at Cement Schools. On July 17, 1949, she married Thomas James Harris and they shared 47 years together until his passing in 1997. Syble was saved in the Amber First Baptist Church and was baptized in the Chickasha First Baptist Church. In her older years, she became a faithful member of the Chickasha First Baptist Church. She and Tom raised their family at Anadarko. She worked as a grocery clerk in Anadarko at various stores over the years. In 1999, she moved to Chickasha to care for her sister, Fay. She also worked as an aide with the Chickasha Public Schools Title 1 Reading Program, even taking a required test in her 70's and passing, continuing to help the children, whom she loved and missed once she retired. Syble was an avid reader of all genres; she had a complete collection of Louis Lamour books. She also enjoyed working in her flower garden. She was preceded in death by both parents; her husband Tom Harris; brothers Andy Morrow, Bill Morrow, and Melvin Morrow; sister Nilla Fay Morrow; and granddaughter Tammy McGuire. Interment will be in Verden Cemetery under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home |
