July 12, 1931 ~ March 31, 2010


Funeral service for Joe Dee Ersland, age 78 of Chickasha, Oklahoma, will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 5, 2010, in the Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church. Rev. Dave Klumpp will officiate.

Joe Dee Ersland was born the son of Leslie Ersland and Marguerite Brittain Ersland on July 12, 1931, in Chickasha. He died on March 31, 2010, at the Clinton Veterans Center in Clinton, Oklahoma.

In 1949, he joined the United States Army and was a member of the 82nd Airborne. He was stationed at Fort Ord, California, Fort Bragg, North Carolina and Okinawa. He married Patricia Joan Wilson in September, 1950. He worked for the United States Postal Service as a Rural Mail Carrier until his retirement. Joe enjoyed coaching his son in Little League and OK Kids baseball for nine years. He received the distinguished honor of Eagle Scout, Boy Scouts of America. He was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader for his son and later two of his grandsons.

Joe enjoyed collecting antique cars. He was a member of the Lawton Antique Auto Club and started the Chickasha Antique Auto Club in 1969 serving on the Board of Directors for many years. Joe enjoyed his hobby and amassed a distinguished collection of antique cars. His passion was White Steam automobiles and he was noted for having not only a run of White Steamers, but owning a 1901 White Steam car that was known to be the earliest in existence.

He was founder of the Chickasha Pre-War Swap Meet in 1991 that continues to be the largest Pre-War Swap meet in the world. Joe served on the National Board of Directors of the Horseless Carriage Club of America. He received the Marion Welch Award and the Harry Mann Award for Advancement of the Preservation of Antique Cars. Joe was an avid sports fan and delighted in supporting his grandchildren in sports from ages 6 years through college in football, wrestling, baseball, soccer and cheerleading. He rarely missed one of his grandkids events.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patty Ersland, his parents, Leslie and Marguerite Ersland, and one brother, Monroe Ersland.

Survivors include: Daughter & Husband: Dee & Gary Surber, Son & Wife: Mike & Susie Ersland, Daughter & Husband: Teri & Jeff Kinslow, Nine Grandchildren: Matthew Surber & wife, Deah; Patrick Surber & wife, Keri; Saradee Griffin & husband, Sammy; Erik Terry & wife, Jenn; Jason Terry; Cassie Ersland; Ryan Ersland; Justin Kinslow & Amy Osborn. Seven Great Grandchildren: Luke & Madi Surber; Allie Surber; Haddee & Emmee Kate Griffin; Parrish & Eli Terry; a new arrival in May, Karson Garrett Surber, Sister & Husband: Louise and Jerry Campbell.

Interment will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery. Service will be under the direction of the McRay Funeral Home.
