Pauls Valley, Oklahoma July 2019 February 27, 1948 ~ July 23, 2019 William "Bill" Andrew Etheredge, of Pauls Valley, passed away surrounded by his family on July 23, 2019 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of 71 years. Bill was born the oldest of 3 sons on February 27, 1948 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma to Edith Bell [King] Etheredge and Jack Chamlee Etheredge. Pauls Valley was where Bill lived his early days and while in middle school moved to Wynnewood, where his father was a longtime employee of the Kerr-McGee refinery. Bill was a 1966 graduate of Wynnewood High School, where he was a member of their award-winning high school band. After high school, Bill went to East Central University in Ada and was a member of the East Central University Bands, while pursuing his music degree. While in college, he and Nancy were married on September 1, 1969. He went on to continue his education at ECU where he earned his B.A. degree in Music Education in 1970. Immediately after graduating, he enlisted into the U.S. Army Reserve, in which he served for 6 years during the Vietnam era, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 1976. Bill was a band director for 18 years in several schools in Oklahoma. He started his career in band directing in Maud in 1971, and was there for 2 years. He then spent one year in Dickson in 1973, where he started the band program. After that, he then spent the last 14 years of his band directing career at Ardmore. Bill went on to earn his Master’s Degree in Counseling from ECU. He became the high school counselor at Marietta, then to Plainview, but eventually returned to Marietta where he retired from the State of Oklahoma in 1999 after 30 years of teaching. Bill spent the next 10 years as a counselor at The Colony High School in The Colony, Texas at which time he retired from the State of Texas in 2009. Bill then returned to Pauls Valley where he has enjoyed helping his son and the band students at Pauls Valley High School. He touched thousands of lives throughout his band directing and counseling career, and his greatest joy of teaching was the interactions with all of his students, current and former. Bill never met a stranger, and loved visiting with people. He always had a warm smile and had a knack for making people laugh with his sense of humor. Bill was a member of First United Methodist Church of Pauls Valley. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Jack Chamlee and Edith Bell Etheredge; and a nephew, Matthew Thomas Etheredge. Surviving family include his two children, Drew Patrick Etheredge, of Pauls Valley; and Erin Ann Etheredge Spencer, and her husband, Charles, and sons, Jake and Caleb, all of Ardmore; the mother of his children, Nancy, of Ardmore; his brother Hugh, and wife Kerri of Oklahoma City; his brother Jay, and his wife Sharon of Allen, TX. Nieces and nephews include Brittani Etheredge, of Mustang; and nephew Joey Etheredge, of Allen, TX. Family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Friday July 26 at Stufflebean-Coffey Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 27, 2019 at 10:30 am at Trinity Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Watson officiating. Interment will be at Whitebead Cemetery under the direction of Stufflebean-Coffey Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family has set up a scholarship fund in Bill’s name that will be awarded to a high school band senior at the Garvin County High School Honor Band next spring.
