Thomas Douglas Whitaker
December 25, 1860 ~ May 28, 1944


Rites are Held Memorial Day

Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, May 30 at the Methodist Church at Paoli for Thomas Douglas Whitaker. Services were conducted by Rev. W. Leonard Stigler, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Pauls Valley. He was assisted by Rev. Wood, Sulphur and Rev. Carter of Paoli.

Mr. Whitaker, born at Dover, Tennessee, December 25, 1860, passed from this life May 28, 1944.

His early life was spent in Tennessee where he married Ollie Belle Smith on March 29, 1883.

The family moved to Oklahoma in 1903. Since that time they have resided at Wanette, Paoli, and Sulphur.

To this union 10 children were born, three of whom preceded him in death. In addition to his wife he leaves five sons, two daughters, 33 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, one brother and a cousin, also a foster son. Claude, Walter, and Ethler Whitaker reside in the Paoli community. Nolan Whitaker at Norman and Norman Whitaker at Purcell. The daughters, Mrs. H. H. Dodd reside in Byars and Mrs. Roy Kinney, at Oklahoma City. His brother V. B. Whitaker, Meeker, Oklahoma. His cousin Lear Mayfield at Wayne. The foster son, W. T. Harris, lives at Kingston, Oklahoma. Six grandsons are in the armed service: Sgt. Ray Whitaker, in the southwest Pacific; Sgt Otis I. Whitaker, southern England; Vaughn Whitaker, MM3c, southwest Pacific; Woodrow Futrell PO1c, McAlester, Oklahoma; Sgt. Ernest Levon Kinney, USMC., Mojave, California; Capt. C. B. Moon, Camp Stanley, San Antonio, Texas.

Mr.Whitaker united with the Missionary Baptist Church in 1922 and has been an honorary member of the Odd Fellows fraternity since 1933.

Pallbearers were Judd Franks, D. Pendley, R. E. Church, Sam Sanford, Joe Black, and Riley Hart.

Honorary bearers were J. C. Thompson, Frank Rodgers, Joe and Blucher Jarrel, Dick Gibson, Charlie Jones, and J. A. Cole.

Internment was made in Paoli cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of the Dunn Funeral Home, Sulphur.
