Hazel Sherman Porter
July 11, 1923 ~ August 30, 2017


Hazel Sherman Porter was born July 11, 1923 in Wynnewood, Oklahoma, the eleventh of twelve children born to Dock and Nancy Sherman. After a life well lived she entered the gates of heaven on August 30, 2017.

At an early age she accepted Jesus as her Savior and was active in Baptist churches throughout her life.

She graduated from Wynnewood High School in 1941. She attended Oklahoma City University but left before graduating to go to work for the FBI in Washington DC as a file clerk. On July 30, 1944, she married Delmer Dean "Del" Porter in an Army chapel in Neosho, Missouri.

When Del was transferred to the Philippines in December 1944 Hazel moved to Oklahoma City to live until he was discharged from the Army.
She and Del raised three daughters Jean, Kay and Lisa. The family moved frequently living in Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois and Tennessee. Hazel worked as a bookkeeper. She enjoyed gardening and reading.

In 1965 Hazel decided to go back to college and finish her degree, the family moved to Norman, Oklahoma so Hazel could attend Oklahoma University. She completed her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Library Science.

Hazel was the Head Acquisition Librarian at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa for 9 years. Hazel and Del lived in Mannford, Oklahoma for 34 years. Hazel reorganized the Mannford First Baptist Church Library after the church building was destroyed in a tornado. The church library was named in her honor. She also helped start a public library in Mannford, OKlahoma.

Hazel is survived by her three daughters, Jean Tahkofper, Kay Marshall and husband Kent, Lisa O'Malley and husband Frank. Six grandchildren Sheila Miranda and husband Danny, Sherry White, Sean Marshall and wife Dena, Monica Minkel and husband Daniel, Shawna Briggs and husband Dre and Katie Powless and husband Troy, and seventeen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Del, parents, brothers and sisters.
In lieu of flowers contributions to Oklahoma Baptist Children's Home in memory of Hazel Porter would be appreciated. The address is: Oklahoma Baptist Children's Home, 3800 N May, Oklahoma City, OK 73112.

Visitation will be Sunday September 3rd from 1pm until 8pm at Havenbrook Funeral Home and Tuesday September 5th from 8am until 8pm at Havenbrook Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 1:00pm Wednesday September 6th at Havenbrook Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at Oaklawn Cemetery in Wynnewood, OK
