Gary Wayne Claxton
August 15, 1960 ~ January 6, 2011

Gary Wayne Claxton, of Austin, Texas, formerly of Pauls Valley, was born August 15, 1960 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma to Duone and Carolyn [James] Claxton.

A great country singer and songwriter, Gary Claxton, whose vocals captured the essence of Webb Pierce and Faron Young, passed away Thursday, January 6, 2011 in Austin, Texas at 50 years of age. Claxton played at the Continental Club every Sunday for more than ten years in Heybale with super sidemen Redd Volkaert [Merle Haggard] and Earl Poole Ball [Johnny Cash]. Known as a gentleman as well as a smooth singer, Claxton was 50.

Gary and Amanda Flynn met while living in San Francisco, California. He moved to Nashville, Tennessee in a Jim Beam-sponsored country songwriting competition in the early '90's. But he quickly soured on the watered-down rock passing for country music at the time and pined for old-fashioned honky tonk. While in Nashville "Mandy" moved there with him and they were married. Soon they moved to make their home in Austin, Texas where he continued his career as a Professional Musician, Song Writer and Country Singer in a well-known band called "Heybale".

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Pauls Valley.

A memorial was held Sunday at the Continental Club, where two new albums Claxton had just completed, with Heybale and Flat Top Jones, was played.

Gary was preceded in death by his father, Duone Claxton on April 26, 1999.

Surviving family include his wife, Amanda "Mandy" of the home; his mother, Carolyn Claxton of Pauls Valley; two brothers, Dennis Claxton, of Los Angeles, California; and Rodger Claxton, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and four nieces, Simone, Miranda, Lillian Sage "Lillie" and Taelyn.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church of Pauls Valley officiated by Dr. Joe Elam. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Interment and professional services are under the direction of Stufflebean-Coffey Funeral Home.
