Leonard A. Brumley
January 1, 1926 ~ January 5, 2012

He is one of the tallest of men, for with him it is the truth that always wins. With a twinkle in his eyes and a smile on his face, he reveals the sincerity of a man whose heart is in the right place.

Leonard A. Brumley, of Pauls Valley, was born January 1, 1926 in Stella, Oklahoma to Jefferson Carol Brumley and Mary Lou Love Brumley. He passed from this life on January 5, 2012 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma at the age of 86 years. He was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church and attended the First Presbyterian Church of Pauls Valley.

Leonard grew up in Paoli and attended Crossroads School where he was a leading basketball player. Leonard lived all of his adult years in Pauls Valley where he met the love of his life and later married Mary Lou Gilbreath on April 22, 1950 in Gainesville, Texas. Their 62 years of marriage produced three children, Alpha, Cathy and Lenny and also many business ventures and dreams that came true.

Leonard retired after 29 years with Lone Star Natural Gas Company. During that time he also worked for himself in his off hours trading cars, trading horses, raising cattle, planting hay, laying pipelines, cooking hamburgers, selling groceries, working oil and gas, owning a salt water trucking company and his pride the "Leonard & Lou's Super Stop".

Working 13 to 16 hour days most of his life, Leonard did find time to help with various community activities. He donated his welding skills to work on the Kiwanis swimming pool during its construction. He served two years as president of the Pauls Valley Round-up Club and again helping to construct the rodeo grounds. He also organized the first Garvin County Rodeo produced by the late world renowned cowboy Jim Shoulders and donated the proceeds to help build the Cowboy Hall of Fame.

Leonard served on the Rural Water District Board and sponsored many men, women, youth T-ball and little league teams. Leonard found much pride and joy in his family and loved the sound of "Poppy" coming from his grandchildren. He loved looking out the kitchen window to survey his cattle eating on the bottom land farm. He loved driving a red pickup, going to a good horse race, cuddling with his late canine companion Rudy, eating a Leonard's hamburger, being a gentleman that always tipped his hat, wearing nice starched shirts, and watching all and any westerns on T.V. But his greatest love, enjoyment and comfort in life was the hand of Mommy Lou.

Leonard was preceded by his parents; brothers, Henry, Tom, John, Freeman "Bo", Oscar "Ott" and Bill; sisters, Sarah, Bertha, Dorothy, infant sister, Carrie, then Pearl and Myrtle.

Leonard's surviving family include his wife, Mary Lou Brumley, of the home; 3 children, Alpha Elkins and her husband, Von, of Pauls Valley; Cathy Strickland, of Katy, Texas; and Lenny Brumley and his wife, Tina, of Pauls Valley; 2 sisters, Rosa Brumley and Ruby Engle, both of Pauls Valley; 9 grandchildren, Billy, Lee, Jonathan, Hunter, Kacie, Ryan, Zac, Alex and Dylan, and 7 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 9, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Stufflebean Chapel of Remembrance officiated by Rev. Tom Buzbee. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery under the direction of Stufflebean-Coffey Funeral Home.
