Radford James "Rad" Barrett
December 6, 1914 ~ April 26, 2005

NORMAN, Okla. - Radford James "Rad" Barrett, 90, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Havenbrook Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Trevor Smith officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Pauls Valley.

Mr. Barrett was born December 6, 1914, in Wynnewood to James W. and Kittie [Braswell] Barrett.

He graduated from high school in Wynnewood in 1932.

He spent a year working in oilfields and then began working in the lumber industry. In 1939, he moved to Amarillo, Texas, and continued in the lumber industry until his retirement as managing partner of Star Lumber and Hardware in Amarillo.

Rad married Lorene Bastion in 1939 in Pampa, Texas. She preceded him in death in 1974. In July 1976, he married Lula May Butler Young in Amarillo. They moved to Norman in 1980, so they could enjoy the OU Sooners. May preceded him in death in 2002.

Rad was an ambassador for the Norman Chamber of Commerce and was a longtime member of McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church in Norman.

With his gentlemanly demeanor and wonderful character, Rad set an example for us all. As a father, grandfather and great-grandfather, his love and doting was precious to observe and experience.

Rad left a special legacy for his neighbors along Barry Switzer Avenue in Norman with the Christmas yard art he helped establish years ago, which is still in use each Christmas. Of great pride was his home and yard which was awarded "Best Mature Garden" in 1997 by the Chamber of Commerce.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother; a sister; a grandson; and eldest daughter, Deborah Kay Barrett.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Barrett of Edinburg, Texas, and Jana Dabney and husband, Wayne, of Chickasha; a son, Woody Young and wife, Penny, of Dallas; four grandchildren, Dan Young and wife, Amy, of Pittsburgh, Chris Young and wife, Amy, of Plano, Texas, Julie Devoti and husband, Matthew, of St. Louis and Brian Dabney and wife, Hillary, of Versailles, Ky.; and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jim Barrett, Brian Dabney, Wayne Dabney, Lee Ivy, Chris Young, Dan Young, David Peetom and Matt DeVoti.

The family suggests memorials be to Chickasha Public School Foundation, 900 W. Choctaw Road, Chickasha, OK 73018; or Cleveland County Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 1005, Norman, OK 73070-1005.
