Dr Augustin Henry Shi Sr
July 15, 1834 - October 29, 1900

Mary Jane [Brawner] Shi
October 20, 1844 - July 6, 1931

Dr Augustin Henry Shi was born in 1834 in Monticello, Georgia. He was a physician in the Confederate Army, serving until incapacitated by ill health. He graduated medical school from Emery College in Atlanta, Georgia, prior to 1860. He found the study of the Classics, poetry, and history a most delightful diversion from the duties of a physician. His wife, Mary Jane Brawner Shi, was born in 1844 in Madison, Georgia, having a number of brothers who were physicians. They married in 1860 in Lumpkin, Georgia. During the days of their honeymoon, she saw him march off to war with two of his brothers who were also Confederate physicians. Before their marriage, she graduated from the famous school for girls, Salem Female Academy (founded 1772) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. There she gained an extensive knowledge of literature, current events, and the Bible. Her strong faith was indeed a guide for her daily living. While at school, she became an accomplished seamstress, and during her lifetime she completed a prodigious amount of museum quality handwork.

In 1898, Dr and Mrs Shi came to McGee to be near their sons because of his failing health. He passed away in 1900. At that time, his sons, Drs Gus and Pat Shi, traveled to Florida, bringing back their brothers, "Cap" and "Buck"; their sister, "Mamie"; and her daughter, Ida Mae; and Pat's son, Garvin. Mamie, whose other daughter and husband had passed away in 1900 in Florida, eventually operated a large boarding house in Stratford until 1938. Mary Jane and Garvin lived there a great deal of the time, although Mary Jane had a house at one time and also lived with her sons, Cap and Gus. Mary Jane Shi died at the home of her daughter, Mamie, on July 6, 1931, at the age of 86.

Mallory R. Harvey is the great granddaughter of Dr. Augustin(e) Henry and Mary Jane [Brawner] Shi through their son, Dr. Augustin Shi and granddaughter, Dorothy [Shi] Robertson.
