August 1918

Levine Hubert "Veen" Jackson
January 31, 1885 ~ August 15, 1918

While digging a well on his place, "Veen" was overcome by gas. Others, including his cousin, Murray Grantham, tried to rescue him from the cramped well space. They finally were able to "harness" him with rope, and began pulling him to the surface.

Just as the rescuers managed to get the unconscious "Veen" to the opening of the well, he somehow slipped from them, falling back to the bottom of the well, sustaining a severe head injury.

A second attempt was made, successfully bringing him to the surface, with "Veen" lingering several days before his untimely death on 15 August 1918 at the age of 35 at Paul's Valley, Garvin County , Oklahoma.

Although Levine was a great proponent of education [he was actually Secretary of the Prairie View School Board when he died] however, after his death none of his children ever attended school.
