Virgil Leroy BRAKHAGE

Zion Lutheran Cemetery

September 17, 1923 - November 11, 2012

Funeral services for Virgil Leroy Brakhage, 89, of Lahoma, Oklahoma will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at Zion Lutheran Church in Lahoma under direction of Stittsworth Funeral Service. Viewing will begin at 9:00 a.m. prior to the service. Committal prayers and interment will follow at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery north of Lahoma. Visitation with the family will follow the burial at Zion Lutheran Parish Hall.

Virgil was born northwest of Lahoma on September 17, 1923, to Christopher and Martha (Nehring) Brakhage and passed away on November 11, 2012.

He attended Hillside Country School and Starlight Country School north of Lahoma as well as Zion Lutheran Parochial School. Virgil graduated from Lahoma High School in 1942 where he enjoyed sports and participated in school plays. He married Neva Jean Johnson on September 17, 1949 at Zion Lahoma. They made their home just east of Lahoma and farmed in the area all his life. Virgil began farming with his dad and later farmed with his son, Gaylon and daughter-in-law, Teresa. Virgil and Neva celebrated sixty-three years of marriage this past September. Virgil was an active member of the community and served on the Lahoma Board of Education for several years.

He was baptized as an infant and was a confirmed lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Lahoma where he loved to sing in the choir. He was a member of Zion’s Men’s Club and enjoyed playing darts with Lutheran Men’s Clubs from around the area as well as working and serving at the Annual Groundhog Suppers. Virgil served at Zion as church treasurer and usher for many years.

His pride and joy were his seven grandchildren. He attended countless basketball, baseball and softball games as well as stock shows to show his support. He especially enjoyed farming with his oldest grandson, Garrett, for the last several years. He was a proud Grandpa and never missed an opportunity to brag about all his grandkids.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Neva; daughter, Lori (Brakhage) Tydings and her husband David of Enid; Gaylon Brakhage and his wife Teresa of Lahoma; grandchildren; Garrett Brakhage of Lahoma, Cortney (Brakhage) Ratzlaff and her husband Chase of Tahlequah, Lauren Brakhage, Emily Tydings, Colton Brakhage, Chris Tydings and Reagan Brakhage; two brothers, Wilbur Brakhage of Stillwater and Gerald Brakhage of Lahoma; one sister, Willa Mae (Brakhage) Koehn of Lahoma; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran Hour Ministries or the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetary Fund.
