Waukomis Cemetery


The funeral for James Walkley Sabin, 98, of Enid , will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, at Golden Oaks Chapel. The Rev. Norman "Shorty" Unruh will officiate. A private burial will be held in Waukomis Cemetery prior to the service. Arrangements are by Brown-Cummings Funeral Home. The casket will be open until 9:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

He was born March 16, 1910, on a farm southeast of Waukomis to Vern and Bessie Roads Sabin and died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, at Golden Oaks Nursing Home.

He was raised and educated in Waukomis, graduating in 1928. He attended Phillips University and Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

He married Agnes Jarolim Feb. 14, 1931. They made their home in Waukomis until 1960, when they moved to Enid . They moved to Fort Worth, Texas, in 1992. She died in October 1995. He returned to Enid where he lived at Golden Oaks Village.

He worked as an automobile mechanic at Money Chevrolet dealership, then at Waukomis Co-op elevator. He later purchased the Waukomis Lumber Yard with J.B. Allen and sold it in 1952.

He then worked for Hackney Iron and Steel Co. for 23 years, retiring in 1975. He served as president of Waukomis School Board and served as mayor for four years before moving to Enid .

He also was a member of Waukomis Lions Club and Waukomis Masonic Lodge.

Surviving are one son, Jim; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Agnes, he was preceded in death by four brothers.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to St. Jude's Children's Hospital for the Children's Research Center or any children's charity.
