Waukomis Cemetery


Funeral service for Gale H. Johnson, of Enid, will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, at Christian Church of the Covenant with Pastor Pat Sutherlin officiating. Burial will follow in Waukomis Cemetery under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home. Gale was born to Buford and Fern Bouseman Johnson on Sept. 13, 1913, and died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, at the age of 98. As a child, his family lived in various places in the Round Grove community in Oklahoma and he attended Tonkawa High School.

On July 15, 1937, Gale and Pauline Caughlin eloped and were married in Cherokee, Okla. They celebrated their 50th anniversary July 12, 1987, with a reception and dance. Pauline died March 8, 1988.

Gale worked at the Tonkawa Ice Plant in Tonkawa, Okla., and construction work in Kansas City, Kan. Then he moved to Texas and worked for the Chicago Corp in Clarkwood, Carthage, Corpus Christi and Sinton. The last move was to Enid, Okla., in 1955 with the Champlin Petroleum Co. On September 30, 1978, Gale retired after 34 years and 2 months as gas measurement superintendent. Gale was a charter member of Christian Church of the Covenant. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and Polka Club.

He is survived by his loving companion, Odessie Weldon; daughters, Billie Dunkerson and husband John of Enid and Paula Deel and husband Paul of Newberry Springs, Calif.; granddaughter, Lisa (Troy) Hersch of Waukomis; grandson, Brett (Jacquetta) Perry of Enid; granddaughter, Leanne (Brian) Skelly of Newberry Springs, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Jarrod (Carly) Maly, Colton Maly, Braden Perry, Katelyn Perry, Cody Perry, Madison Rhodes and Ashley, Johnny, Jeffery, Paulina Skelly; great-great-grandson, McClain Maly; stepgranddaughters, Elizabeth and Dan Sullivan and Carla and Jace Chiles; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Ryan, Keely and David.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sister, Virginia Masters, and brother Gorden Johnson.
