Waukomis Cemetery


The funeral for Joe L. Burford, 93, who died Monday at a Tahlequah hospital, will be at 2 PM Friday at the United Methodist Church in Waukomis. The Rev.'s Kent Wood and Lester Myers will officiate. Burial will be at the Waukomis Cemetery, directed by Brown Funeral Home.

The casket will remain closed after the service.

He was born February 8, 1894, in Marshfield, Missouri, to Benjamin and Mattie Burford and moved with the family to Waukomis in 1895. He attended Morning Star School and graduated from Waukomis High School. He then homesteaded in the Idaho Falls, Idaho, area and on December 2, 1914, married Ida A. Bartlett in Pocatella, Idaho. They moved to the Waukomis area in 1917.

Burford operated the Cedar Grove Dairy until 1943 when the couple moved to Enid. They returned to Waukomis in 1969. He was a life – long carpenter and farmer. He was also a member of the Waukomis United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include a son, Ben of Waukomis; a daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Betty Mae) Walterscheidt of Waukomis; a brother, Bill of Enid; seven grandchildren; 24 great – grandchildren; and 24 great – great – grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida, August 4, 1979, two brothers and three sisters.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the Salvation Army.
