Funeral rites for Joe M. Atherton, 83, Waukomis, will be at 3 PM today in the First United Methodist Church at Waukomis with the Rev. Byron Wolfe officiating. Interment will be in the Waukomis Cemetery under the direction of the Brown Funeral Home.

The body will lie in state at the funeral home until 1 PM and from 1:30 PM to service time in the church. The casket will remain closed following the service.

The family has designated the First United Methodist Church of Waukomis for memorial contributions. Those who wish may make contributions in Atherton's memory to the church or through the funeral home.

Atherton was born near Lafayette, Illinois, on May 24, 1890, to Franklin and Alice Atherton. He attended Lafayette public schools until moving with his parents to Oklahoma in the spring of 1906. Since that time, he had lived in Waukomis and the vicinity.

He married Grace Blunk and they established a home on a farm northwest of Waukomis. There they lived until Atherton's health began to fail and they moved to Waukomis.

Atherton served on the election board for many years and also on the school board. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors are his wife, Grace of the home; two sons, Milton of Waukomis, Donald of Austin, Texas; one sister, Mrs. Artie Pream of Waukomis; two daughters – in – law, several nieces and nephews, seven grandchildren, and three great – grandchildren.

The funeral for Grace Atherton, 93, a former resident of Waukomis who died Saturday at an Enid nursing home after a long illness, will be 2 PM Wednesday at the Christian Church in Waukomis. The Rev.'s Harold Honnold and Tom Hobby will officiate. Burial will be at the Waukomis Cemetery under direction of Brown Funeral Home.

Mrs. Atherton was born January 23, 1893, on a farm West of Dover in Old Oklahoma Territory to Amos and Maria Blunk. During the Cherokee Strip, September 1893, the family staked a claim Southwest of Waukomis. She was the youngest of 10 children, all of whom are now deceased.

On February 6, 1911, she married Joe M. Atherton. They lived on a farm northwest of Waukomis until his health failed. They then moved into the town of Waukomis. The couple celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary before his death February 26, 1974.

Mrs. Atherton was a member of the Waukomis Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She also was a former member of the Happy Valley Club.

Survivors include two sons, Milton, Waukomis, and Donald, Spicewood, Texas; seven grandchildren; four great – grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials in her name may be made to the Waukomis Christian Church or to a charity of one's choice with the funeral home serving as custodian of the funds.
