The memorial service for Elwynna "Wendy" Woelke, 90-year-old Enid resident, is 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 20, 2018, at the Central Christian Church. The Revs. Kathy Bryant and Don Johnson will officiate. A private family burial will precede the service in Memorial Park Cemetery, under the direction of Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home.
Wendy was born December 13, 1927, in Oklahoma City to Harry Gaunt and Hazel (Kendrick) Gaunt, and passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Saturday, January 13, 2018. She graduated from Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City. After graduation, she attended Oklahoma City University. She then transferred to Phillips University, where she met the love of her life, Joe Woelke. They were married May 14, 1950, in Enid at the home of Mrs. George Storm. Joe was an officer and pilot in the United States Air Force. He was stationed at many Air Force bases all over the world, including Germany, throughout the United States, and Japan, which was the highlight of their military experience. Wendy thought of herself as a "camp follower" because of her special role of establishing and maintaining a loving, stable home for her husband and three daughters, wherever they landed.
She learned to survive frequent, long separations from her husband, many moves without help, the harsh winters of northern Maine, and even the hurricanes of Florida. Her fondest memories were of being First Lady of a base commander in Japan, where she accompanied her husband to many military and diplomatic functions, while experiencing the fascinating culture of the country. In 1978, after Joe's retirement from the Air Force, they returned to their hometown of Enid. Joe became the Director of Personnel at Central National Bank while Wendy continued her role as a proud homemaker and community volunteer. She was a long-time member of Central Christian Church, where she was an active member of Christian Women's Fellowship. She was a member and officer of PEO AQ. She also served on the boards of Meals on Wheels, Meadow's Point, and the Enid Symphony. She was an avid bridge player, enjoyed sewing, and delighted in making satin pillowcases, which she loved giving as gifts.
Wendy is survived by daughters, Joan McIntyre (Dr. Dennis) of Enid, Ann Woelke of Port Hueneme, CA, and Susan "Sue" Bock (Dr. Alan) of Edmond. She is also survived by grandchildren, Dr. Brad (Jessica) McIntyre, David (Kara) McIntyre, Ryan Bosley, Adam Bosley, Dr. Laura Bock, Julie Bock, Sally Bock; and great-grandchildren, Dodson, Ellie, Davis, Gus, and Brooks.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sisters, and three brothers.
Memorials may be made, through Henninger-Hinson, to the Central Christian Church Christian Women's Fellowship.
