The funeral for Bertha M. Ward, 61, of Enid, will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010, at First Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Alfred Baldwin will officiate. Burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, Enid. Arrangements by Russ-worm Funeral Home.

On Monday, Aug. 9, 2010, an angel was sent to Enid to receive one of God's own and carry her to a place where there is no suffering, darkness or heartaches, only peace, joy and happiness. Bertha Ward was ready and willing to receive God's blessing to eternal life.

Bertha Mae (Shannon) Ward was born Nov. 26, 1948, in Enid, Okla., to Lonnie and Velma Shannon. Here she grew up and attended the public school system. Bertha Mae (Shannon) Ward was born Nov. 26, 1948, in Enid, Okla., to Lonnie and Velma Shannon. Here she grew up and attended the public school system. She accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of First Missionary Baptist Church. Bertha met and married Athine Ward and to this union four children were born. She worked at Phillips University as a caterer for a number of years. Bertha loved doing home crafts and she worked at this after retiring from Phillips. She loved going to the Y and cooking for her family and church. When you step into First Missionary Baptist Church, you will immediately see her handiwork. She loved to make her church look pretty with beautiful flowers and decorations. Bertha also was in charge of the kitchen committee for a number of years. She loved reading and spending time with her family members.

Bertha leaves to mourn her homegoing: her husband, Athine Ward of the home; two sons, Marcus (Carla) Ward of Lawton, Okla., and Marlon Ward of Midwest City, Okla.; one stepson, Ronald Ward of Oklahoma City; two daughters, Derease (Bo) Wright of Lawton, Okla., and DeEtta (Otis) Towns of Lancaster, Texas; two brothers, Alfred Ray Shannon of Desoto, Texas, and Clarence Belcher Jr. of Enid; one sister, Barbara Jean (Paul) Wheeler of Tulsa, Okla.; two aunts, Wanda Fay Scott and Mary Traylor, both of Pittsburgh, Texas; seven grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, one sister and one brother.
