Simon (Pete) VanMeter, 62, 2620 N. Monroe, died Tuesday in a local hospital following a short illness. His service will be at 10 AM Saturday in the Grace Mennonite Church with the Rev. Wilfred Ulrich officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Ladusau – Evans Funeral Home.

VanMeter was born May 24, 1917, near Dacoma, and moved to Enid at an early age. He and Viola May Marney were married August 24, 1938, at Waukomis.

VanMeter worked as a superintendent at Grain Elevators and Millwright construction worker until 1960. The past seven years, he had farmed in the Hennessy area.

Survivors include his wife, Viola; one daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Velma) Chapmond, Waukomis; one son, Ernie, Enid; two brothers, Sam, Dacoma, and Paul, Broken Arrow; five sisters, Mrs. Elmer (Mary) Shackelford, Dacoma, Mrs. Maurice (Kathryn) Whitsitt, Duncan, Mrs. Johnny (Naomi) Robertson, Putnam, Rhoda Convers, Kelseyville, California, and Ruth Williams, Wichita, Kansas; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter and one granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, Cancer Division, with the funeral home serving as custodian.
