© Enid Morning News Enid, Oklahoma December 1992 November 5, 1920 ~ December 11, 1992 Emery Lavelle Thornton, age 72 of Enid, died Friday in St Mary's Hospital. He was born November 5, 1920 in Sikes, Louisiana to W. W. and Ola R. [Creel] Thornton. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1940 serving 23 years. He was in World War II, European Theater where he was awarded the Purple Heart, also served in the Korean War and Vietnam Conflict. He was on Utah Beach on D-Day. He was stationed in Alaska, Panama, Japan and Vietnam. He married Marjorie Jantz Funk on July 13, 1978, in Pacific Grove, California. He was a Mail Carrier for 12 ½ years with the US post office in Monrovia, Louisiana, Monterey, California and Ft. Ord, California. He retired in 1979 moving to Pea Ridge, Arkansas for six years, then to Enid in 1986. A Christian for 53 years, he loved Jesus as his Lord and Savior. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church and Sunday school of Enid. He is survived by his wife of the home, daughters: Karen [Thornton] Woods and Jacque [Thornton] Knox of Monterey, California, a son: Dennis Thornton of Maui, Hawaii, step daughters: Mrs H. W. [Kathleen] Schweitzer of Forestville, Maryland, Mr and Mrs Ronald [Julie] snow of Enid, step son: Terry Funk of El Paso, Texas, sisters: Mrs Lewis [Veo] Robinson of Shreveport, Louisiana, Essie Raye Thornton of Alexandria, Louisiana, Mrs Sybil Ritchie and Mrs Stansell both of Cold Spring, Texas, brothers: Delmas Thornton of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Conrad Thorton of West Monroe, Louisiana, grandchildren: Michael and Joel Woods, Laura and Jennifer Brickman, all of California, great granddaughter: Danielle Woods of Salinas, California and step grandchildren: William and Bonnie Schweitzer of Forestville, Maryland and Preston and Dixie Snow of Enid. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, one brother and two sisters. Funeral services will be 2:30 PM Monday in the Ladusau-Evans Chapel with Rev Tommy Hinson officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of the Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church with the Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodian of the fund. |
© Enid News and Eagle Enid, Oklahoma December 15, 2018 December 17, 1927 ~ December 6, 2018 A Memorial Service for Marjorie Ruth [Jantz] Funk-Thornton, age 90, of Enid, will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 17, 2018, at Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home with the Reverend Steve Williams officiating. Marjorie will be laid to rest in Memorial Park Cemetery,under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. Marjorie was born December 17, 1927, in Enid, to Irving and Martha Blanche [Convill] Jantz, and passed away Thursday, December 6, 2018, at Greenbrier Village in Enid. She attended Enid Public Schools, Adams Elementary School, Longfellow Junior High School and graduated from Enid High School in 1945, receiving her business training there. Marjorie married William W. Funk on July 7, 1946, in the First United Methodist Church in Enid. Together they raised three children. She was a homemaker and he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service. Also, as joint contractors, they built several homes in Enid. They made their home in Enid for almost thirty-one years until Bill's death in 1977, when Marjorie was only 49 years old at the time. She later met and then married Emery L. Thornton in the Christian Church, Pacific Grove, California. They lived in several cities on the Monterey Peninsula, California. Following his retirement from 23 years of service in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Postal Service, he and Marjorie moved to Pea Ridge, Arkansas, located north of Rogers, Arkansas. She also enjoyed the association with her parents when they retired to Rogers, Arkansas, in 1979. They moved back to Enid in 1986, as a help for her aging parents. Marjorie and Emery were married almost fifteen years before he preceded her in death in 1992. She loved being a homemaker but was also employed as a legal stenographer for the Enid law firm Simon, Simon, Mitchell and Hedrick, and for various law and real estate firms in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Rogers, Arkansas. She eventually retired from the office of Ranney-Davis Wholesale Grocers, of Enid, Oklahoma. Marjorie was a charter member of the First Seniors AMBUCS civic organization, serving on the Board of Directors and as secretary; also a charter member and secretary for the local chapter of National Association for the Uniformed Services [NAUS]; a Charter Member of the World War II Memorial, Washington, D.C., and an Active Member and acting Teasurer of the Enid High School Class of 1945. As hobbies, she enjoyed piano and music, reading, computer, crocheting, needlework and in earlier years sewing wardrobes for her children. She became a Christian and was baptized at the age of nine, dedicating her life then and through all her adult years to serving her Lord Jesus, her marriage mates, and her family and friends with all her heart. She was a member of the Enid Calvary Baptist Church, Ruth Sunday School Class. Marjorie is survived by two daughters and a son: Kathleen A. [Funk] Schweitzer of Bowie, Maryland, Julie M. [Funk] Snow and husband Ronald, of Enid, son Terry W. Funk and wife Harriett, of El Paso, Texas; two granddaughters, Bonnie [Schweitzer] Bottner and husband Michael, of Crofton, Maryland, Dixie D. [Snow] Cooper and husband Eric, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; two grandsons, William H. Schweitzer and wife Rhiannon, of Seoul, Korea, Preston W. Snow and wife Sarah, of Bella Vista, Arkansas; two great-grandsons, Brady Wyatt Snow and Erickson Grant Cooper; seven great-granddaughters, Madelyn Marie Snow, Daisy Anne Cooper, Caroline Kathleen Bottner, Faith Aurelia Bottner, Lorelai McKayla Schweitzer, Alyssa Leilani Schweitzer, and Jillian Rachael Bottner; step-daughter, Karen G. [Thornton] Woods-Iske and husband Alan, of Weaverville, California; two sisters, Carolee M. [Jantz] DeWitt, of Keller, Texas, M. Kay [Jantz] Boaz and husband Robert, of Decatur, Texas; stepgrandchildren; step-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Bill and Emery; son-in-law, Henry "Hank" W. Schweitzer; stepson Dennis H. Thornton; stepgrandson, Joel D. Woods; and two very special British friends for over sixty five years, Margaret M. and George W. Hart of Burgh-le-Marsh, Lincolnshire, England; wonderful friends and neighbors. Marjorie expressed that she had received many wonderful years of blessings from those who touched her life and especially from her beloved daughters and son and their families. Her hope was that all her family would continue to work diligently serving others in a Christian manner. © Enid News and Eagle Enid, Oklahoma March 2012 October 27, 1922 ~ March 31, 2012 ENID — The memorial service for Richard "Dick" Wilson Thornton, 89, will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2012, at Christian Church of the Covenant. Rev Pat Sutherlin will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. Dick was born October 27, 1922, in Redondo Beach, Calif., to John and Emogene [Galusha] Thornton and died Saturday, March 31, 2012, at Oklahoma Veteran Center in Clinton, Okla. He lived in California, Arizona and Vian, Okla., where he graduated from High School. As a ¼ Cherokee Indian, he was able to attend Bacone College in Muskogee, Okla. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 as a Seabee. He served in the D-Day Invasion, June 6, 1944, on Omaha Beach. His unit was based on the beach for three months. Dick built the first latrine on Omaha Beach. He was then shipped back to the U.S. and sent to Okinawa, ready for the invasion of Japan. While situated for invasion, the Japanese surrendered and the war was over. After the war, he attended Oklahoma A&M in 1946, graduating in 1949. On November 23, 1950, he married Phyllis Perkins in Drumright, Okla. He worked for Hughes Tool, now Baker-Hughes, for 30 years as a senior field salesman. Dick was a wonderful father, grandfather and the light of Phyllis' life. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; daughter, Julie McDaniel of Oklahoma City, Okla.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and son, Brad Thornton. Memorials may be made to Clinton VA Hospital, Alzheimer's Department, for a cookout with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds. He had wonderful care there. [Bucket] Thornton, age 83, of Enid, is 2:00 pm, Saturday, May 23, 2020, at Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home Chapel with Mary Ellis [sister] officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery at 12:00 pm, Tuesday, May 26th. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. Bobby was born June 10, 1936, in Kingfisher, OK, to Lewis "Orly" and Lora Lee [Davis] Thornton, and passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2020, in Oklahoma City. Bobby graduated from Pampa High in Pampa, Texas, with the class of 1954, then attended West Texas State College in Canyon, Texas, and participated in ROTC. After college, he worked in the oilfield, eventually starting his own business, Big Buckets Rathole Drilling which he operated for 45 years until his death. He is preceded in death by his parents; and son Daryl Lynn Thornton. He is survived by his love of 25 years, Linda Maupin, of Enid; two sons, Chris Thornton and wife Jeanne, of Hickman, NE; Greg Thornton of McKinney, TX; two step-sons, Larry Rice and wife Jessica, of Enid; Terry Rice and wife Lynette, of Ringwood, OK; step-daughter, Shelli Maupin, of Enid; and step-son, Scott Maupin, of Tampa, FL. He is also survived by many grandchildren, Braden and Caroline Thornton; Jessica Thornton; Emily and Dan Bontrager; Alyssa and Ben Weber; Taylor Thornton; Shayni Rice; Paxton and Rowan Rice; Evan and Blake Maupin; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill Thornton and wife Glenda; two sisters, DeAnne Trolllinger and husband Larry; and Mary Ellis and husband Lyndle.
