Cecil W. Tapp
February 6, 1915 ~ March 1980


Funeral services for Salvation Army Brigadier Cecil Tapp, 65, Shawnee, who died Friday, will be held at 2 PM Monday in the Salvation Army Citadel in Enid with Lieutenant Colonel Harlan Cleveland and Lieutenant Colonel John Jordon officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.

Tapp was born February 6, 1915 at Aline and came to Enid at an early age. He attended Enid schools and was graduated from Enid high school. He attended the Salvation Army College, Atlanta, Georgia, and was ordained as a Salvation Army officer in 1936.

He married the former Ruth Baldry on July 20, 1939 in Austin, Texas. They both served as Corps officers in various places. This was followed by several years as divisional financial secretary. Tapp retired in 1974 and moved back to Shawnee in 1974. He had lived in Shawnee during one of his longer appointments.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth, of the home; three sons, Richard Lester Tapp, Ft. Worth, Texas; Kenneth William Tapp, Atlanta, Georgia; and George Edward Tapp, Tecumseh; two daughters, Cecille Bowman, Bremmerton, Washington, and Kathryn Louise Tapp, San Jose, California; four brothers, George and Floyd Tapp, both of Enid, Loren Tapp, Boise City, Louisiana, and Marlow Tapp, Seattle, Washington; two sisters, Golda Houston, Auburn, Washington, and Blanche Ogden, Seattle, Washington; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

Virgil L. Tapp
November 26, 1928 ~ September 29, 2017


The graveside services honoring the life of Virgil Tapp, 88, of Enid will be held 10:00 A.M. Tuesday October 3, 2017 in the Memorial Park Cemetery with Don Johnson officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Navy. Services are under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

He was born November 26, 1928 to George Tapp and Willa Bradney in Higgins, Texas and left this life on September 29, 2017 in Enid, Oklahoma

He grew up in various communities throughout the United States following his father’s career. He graduated from Topeka High School and then joined the United States Navy in 1946 and was Honorably discharged in 1949. He then owned a lumberyard in Braman, Oklahoma and he managed a large lumberyard and properties in Colorado. He moved to Arizona where he managed a hardware store. He then moved to Enid where he married his wife Shirley Goertz, January 11, 1989 in Enid. He worked for Hughes Lumber Company and retired in 1990. The couple enjoyed retirement and traveled in their 5th wheel. He enjoyed playing golf and was an avid woodworker.

He is survived by his wife, of 28 years, Shirley of the home, his Son Mike Tapp and wife Sherri, of Ponca City, his daughter Susan and husband Jim of Aurora, Colorado one step daughter Janet Jones, twelve grandchildren including step grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one son Ed Tapp.

Memorials may be made to the National Benevolence Association of the Disciples of Christ or to Central Christian Church with Brown-Cummings Funeral Home serving as custodians of the funds.

Shirley [Hurst] Tapp
September 7, 1929 ~ October 7, 2022


A graveside service celebrating and honoring the life of Shirley Tapp, 93, of Enid, will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 12, 2022, in the Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

Shirley was born September 7, 1929, to Clarence and Irene "Jesse" Hurst in Fort Supply, Oklahoma, and passed from this life October 7, 2022, in Enid, Oklahoma.

After moving to Enid at the age of seven, she was raised and educated here, graduating from Enid High School in 1947. Following high school, she began working in retail at JCPenney. Shirley earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in Education from Phillips University and taught at Adams Elementary for 14 years. After receiving her administrator's certification from Oklahoma State University, she served as a principal in Enid Public Schools for an additional 14 years, retiring in 1992.

Shirley married Ervin Lee "Bud" Goertz May 21, 1950, and from this union came one daughter, Janet. Bud passed away in 1981. She and Virgil Lee Tapp were married January 11, 1989. Virgil preceded her in death in 2017.

Shirley was a member of Central Christian Church for over 80 years and served in many capacities, including Board Chairman and elder. She enjoyed sewing and bead work and loved reading a good mystery novel.

She is survived by one daughter, Janet Jones and husband Pierce, of Enid; grandson, Zach Jones and Kristian of Warr Acres; and granddaughter, Katherine Jones of Enid.

Memorials may be made in her honor to the Enid Public School Foundation or Furever Friends, with Brown-Cummings Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.

Kevin Ray Tapp
Januay 8, 1965 ~ July 29, 1976


Funeral for Kevin Ray Tapp, 11, son of Mr and Mrs Jesse Tapp, 817 E Randolph, who was found slain Friday will be today at 3 PM in Willow Road, Christian Church with the Rev. Richard Duckworth officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Henninger – Allen Funeral Home.

Kevin was born January 8, 1965, in Oklahoma City. He had lived in Enid all of his life where he attended Garfield elementary school. He was a member of the fifth grade basketball team and Willow Road, Christian Church.

Besides his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Debra Kay and Tresa Fay, of the home; maternal grandparents, Mr and Mrs E. E. Lamb, Enid, and L. B. Chastain, Hot Springs, South Dakota; and paternal grandparents, Mr and Mrs George Tapp, Enid.
