Funeral Services for Bennie Nickel, 91, formerly of Cleo Springs, will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 30, 2009 at the Fairview Mennonite Brethren Church. The Reverend Leonard Vogt will officiate. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Enid. Arrangements are by the Fairview Funeral Home, Inc.

Viewing will be from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, October 29 at the Fairview Funeral Home Inc.

Bennie Nickel was born May 2, 1918 in Fairview, to Peter P. and Susanna A. (Wichert) Nickel and passed away October 26, 2009 at the Fairview Fellowship Home in Fairview, Oklahoma.

Bennie attended the Red Top and Orienta Schools. As a young man he, with his family found a love for music and played in many different bands, including the Herb Nickel Band. He played music all his life. Bennie married Anna Plummer on April 30, 1938 in Fairview. He worked as a blacksmith and welder for over 40 years. Bennie was very active in the Cleo Springs community. He worked on many projects in town, including the baseball diamond and the rodeo grounds. He sliced watermelons during the Cleo Springs Labor Day Festival for over 30 years. Working with children was very important to him. Bennie umpired many baseball games. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Carmen, Oklahoma. He married Florence Behm on December 22, 1984 in Carmen. Music was an integral part of his life. The day of his departure, he was on the way to the front lobby of the Fairview Fellowship Home to play for his fellow residents.

Bennie is survived by his two sons, Henry Nickel and wife Eve of Cleo Springs, Willard B. Nickel and wife Pat of Newport, North Carolina; one step-daughter Mary Inez Hoffman and husband Neal of Carmen; three brothers, Herb Nickel and wife Rose of Ringwood, Oklahoma, Dean Nickel and wife Joyce of Enid; Eldon Nickel and wife Carol of McWilly, Oklahoma; two sisters, Marjorie Brewton and husband Bud of Yukon, Oklahoma, Ruby Becker and husband Lynford of Enid; sister-in-law Wanda Nickel of Wagner, Oklahoma; brother-in-law Gene Fast of Fairview; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Bennie was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; one grandson; one brother, Alfred and one sister, Lavern.

Memorial contributions may be made to OMRF, heart division, with Fairview Funeral Home Inc. acting as custodian.
