Betty J. Biggs Nichols, 96, Pond Creek, passed away on December 29, 2016, in Enid. She was born on September 11, 1920, in Enid to Roy W. Biggs, Sr., and Lois Holmes Biggs.

Betty was raised on a farm near the Hillsdale community, where she attended school and graduated, the school salutatorian of her class, in 1938. She was always very active in sports, being an outstanding basketball player and golfer. She attended OSU and Enid Business College. In 1942, she married George Lee (Bud) Nichols. Bud was a gunnery sergeant in the Army Air Corps, and Betty was able to work in the finance offices at bases in Biloxi, MS, and Laredo, TX, where he was stationed. Following WWII, they returned to Hillsdale, later moving to the farm near Pond Creek.

Betty was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Pond Creek, and UMW. She volunteered for OBI blood drives and Meals-on-Wheels. Betty was a member of The Mom's Club and Meadowlake Ladies Golf Club. She won several trophies, with her proudest being the club championship in the 1970s and her hole-in-one in 1991. She enjoyed traveling with her friends, attending plays and the symphony and golfing.

Betty was an avid fan of the OSU Cowboys, the Pond Creek Bearcats and the PC-H Panthers. Betty was talented in painting and sewing and always was up for a challenge. She and good friend Shirley Kindred owned and operated The Clothes Closet in Pond Creek for a few years.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Bud, in 1975; her parents; a brother, Roy W. Biggs, Jr., and his wife, Ruth; 4 brothers-in-law; 4 sisters-in-law; and one granddaughter-in-law.

She is survived by a daughter, Claudia Newman, and a son, Mike Nichols, and wife Marsha all of Pond Creek; six grandsons, Joe Newman (Julie), Bixby, Chris Nichols (Mary), Edmond, Scott Newman and Kyle Newman, Blair, Chad Nichols (Ami), Papillion, NE, Matthew Nichols (Kayla), Enid; 9 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; friends; and 1 loyal canine friend, Wally.

A celebration for a life well lived will be held at the United Methodist Church, Pond Creek, at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 2, 2017.

Interment will follow at the Memorial Park Cemetery, Enid. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to UMC, Pond Creek or Hospice Circle of Love.
