Ettamae was born in Kansas on Oct. 21, 1918 to Charles E. and Myrtle Fyffe. The family moved to Ames. Her Siblings included sisters - Velma Fyffe Reynolds; Della Fyffe McKinney; Louise Fyffe; Mrs. E. C. James and brother William Fyffe.

On July 29, 1939, Etta Mae married Sanford H."Sandy" Newsom. To this union was born a daughter, Sandra Newsom and son, Dan Newsom. She was a teacher at Coolidge Grade School in Enid for many years.

Funeral services for Sanford H. “Sandy” Newsom, age 93, of Enid, will be 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Keith Miller and Shorty Unruh officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of the Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.

Sandy was born to John A. and Mary Doughter Newsom Sept. 30, 1913, in Olney, Texas and died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, at Golden Oaks Nursing Home. He had three brothers and six sisters, all of whom are deceased. His father, J.A. Newsom, was a Southern Baptist minister.

Sandy began his formal education at Shawnee and graduated from Yukon High School in 1933. Sandy was selected to the Oklahoma All-State High School football team in 1931. In 1975, the Jim Thorpe Award Committee selected him to “The All-Time Greats of Oklahoma” boys basketball team for the decade of 1930-1939. After graduating from Yukon High School, Sandy attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University from 1934-1938. While at Northwestern he excelled in several sports. He earned 12 in football, basketball and track and two more in baseball. As a basketball player, Sandy was selected to the All-Oklahoma Collegiate Conference team three times, including first team selections his sophomore and senior seasons. In track, he won the Oklahoma Collegiate Conference high jump four straight times. In his junior year, he set a new conference record of 6' 3/4''. Sandy also won the pole vault championship twice and earned several medals in the broad jump and javelin. Sandy was named All-Conference in football his senior year. He was inducted into the school Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. He received his Master’s of Education degree from Phillips University.

Following Sandy’s college career, he played basketball with the Kansas City Martin Oilers and later the Wichita Cessna Bobcats. He also played semi-pro baseball. July 29, 1939, Sandy married Ettamae Fyffe who preceded her beloved husband in death Oct. 14, 2000, after 61 years of marriage.

Sandy began his teaching career in Driftwood, Oklahoma. After teaching school for several years in Kansas, he taught and coached two years at Enid High School. He then became the principal at Emerson Junior High for 17 years. Sandy retired in 1976.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and siblings, which included several stepsisters. He has deeply missed his beloved wife, Ettamae, and his brother, Dalward, to whom he was extremely close.

He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Geurkink of Enid, and son, Dan Newsom of Shreveport, La.; grandsons, Mickey Geurkink of Medford and Pat Geurkink of Enid; great-granddaughters, Kylie Geurkink of Enid and Alex Geurkink of Woodward; great-grandson, Bryan Geurkink of Enid and numerous nephews and nieces.

Sandy was a member of First Baptist Church of Enid where he maintained a close relationship with God, his church and Sunday school class. Sandy once stated, “If I had a motto for living, it would be that I would want to live my life that others might see Jesus in me.”
