Don was born to Lowell and Pauline (Bolenbaugh) Nelson on January 3, 1929 on the family farm west of Carrier, and peacefully passed away surrounded by family on August 17, 2017, in Enid, Oklahoma.

He attended Prairie View School through 8th grade and Goltry through 10th grade. In 1945 the family moved to a farm west of Hunter. He graduated from Hunter High School in 1947 and married Charlene Cake on June 29th, 1950. In 1948 he began his farming career in Hunter where he successfully farmed for 70 years. He loved telling stories about life on the Carrier farm.

Don was on the Hunter School Board and helped coach Little League baseball. He enjoyed assisting his children with their 4-H and FFA activities and projects. He was active in the Hunter United Methodist Church even after moving to Enid in 1997. He attended all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren's athletic events with enthusiasm and thoroughly enjoyed skyping with his out-of-state grandkids.

Don is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Charlene; one daughter Diana Griffith and her husband Mike of Springdale, Arkansas; and one son Jere Don Nelson of Hunter, Oklahoma. He has 6 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He lived a very full and blessed life and will be greatly missed by many.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Leigh J. and Chalmers.
