The funeral service for Dr. John B. Ireland will be Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at 10:00AM in the Central Christian Church. The Revs. Lloyd Lambert, John McLemore, and Don Johnson will officiate. Burial with full military honors will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home.

John Benjamin Ireland was born September 30, 1923 in Marion County, Kansas, to Frank K. and Marie E. (Stoewe) Ireland and passed away at home in Enid, OK on August 11, 2012. John graduated from Florence (KS) High School in 1941, and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree from Phillips University in 1947, a Master of Arts from Wichita State University in 1954, and a Doctorate of Education from the University of Wyoming in 1966. While at Phillips University, he met his wife Maxine (Dillon), and they were married in 1948.

John's undergraduate collegiate days at Phillips University were interrupted by the advent of World War II, and he proudly served his country during this time as a Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, stationed in the South Pacific. After the war, he returned to college but remained as a Marine Corps Reservist for over 20 years, eventually retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel.

John devoted his working career to the field of Education. He began as a high school history teacher and coach at Rose Hill, KS in 1947 and continued in that position until being recalled to active duty by the Marines in 1951 during the Korean Conflict. After returning to civilian life and completing his masters degree in Education, he began a 14 year period of service with the Mulvane, Kansas Public Schools. He served in the positions of classroom teacher, Junior High Principal, High School Principal, and Superintendent of schools for Mulvane during the years of 1953-1967. He became the Superintendent of schools for the Turner School District in Kansas City, Kansas in 1967 and served for two years in that position before leaving to enter the field of college teaching.

John Ireland served as the Director of Teacher Education at Phillips University from 1969-1991, impacting the development and careers of a number of public school teachers in Oklahoma and other states during his tenure.

John was also devoted to community service as is noted in his 21 years spent serving on the Enid Board of Education. He also represented his community as a board member of the Enid Police Commission and the Hedges Regional Speech and Hearing Center.

He was a dedicated member of Central Christian Church in Enid for over 40 years. He is remembered for his many years as an usher, deacon, and elder for the congregation. John was preceded in death by his parents and his seven brothers and sisters (Henry, Kenneth, Gail, Walter, Joyce, Norma, and Opal).

He is survived by his loving wife, Maxine Ireland of Enid, OK; sons Tim (Sandi) Ireland of Stillwater, OK; Tom Ireland of Enid, OK; grandchildren Craig (Meredith) Ireland of Tulsa, OK; and Jill (Greg) Bloyd of Edmond, OK; brothers and sisters in law: Dr and Mrs. Lloyd Lambert, Raymore, Missouri; Dave Roberts, Wichita, Kansas; Betty Ireland, Florence, Kansas; and 17 nieces and nephews.
