October 1, 1894 ~ February 5, 1978


John Hess, 83, 1511 W. Elm, died Sunday in a local hospital. His service will be Tuesday at 2 PM in the Ringwood Presbyterian Church with Doctor Charles Lewis Pattison officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Enid under the direction of Fossett Funeral Home.

The body will lie in state in the funeral home chapel until 12:30 PM Tuesday, and then at the church from 1 o'clock until service time. The casket will not be opened after the service.

Hess was born in a sod house on his father's homestead, 7 miles north of Enid, October 1, 1894.

He married Frieda Caroline Pummitt January 26, 1921, at Enid. She died September 30, 1973.

The couple had lived on a farm northeast of Kremlin, and in 1923, went to California, moving 1.5 years later back to Enid. In 1941, they moved to a farm near Ringwood, living there until 1964 when he retired and moved back to Enid.

Hess served in the Army during World War I, serving in France with the Army Expeditionary Force.

He was a member of the Kremlin Masonic Lodge No. 353, Scottish Right of Guthrie, and a 32nd Degree Mason. He was also a member of the Ringwood Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include one son, John C, Enid; two grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Grover Edward "Bud" Hess Jr
February 26, 1932 ~ March 25, 2011


Graveside service for Grover Edward Junior "Bud" Hess, 79, of Kremlin, will be 2:30 pm Tuesday, March 29, 2011, in Memorial Park Cemetery. Full military graveside rites will be conducted by the Disabled American Veterans. Service is under the kind guidance of Amy Stittsworth Funeral Service and Cremation Directors.

Bud was born February 26, 1932, at Enid General Hospital, the son of Grover and Winifred King [Miller] Hess, and passed away Friday, March 25, 2011, at Integris Bass Baptist Health Center.

His grandparents, Peter and Lily Lamberson Hess and John Lucas Von Willer and Annie Jeanette Colton Miller, ran in the Cherokee Strip on September 16, 1893, and staked their claim north of Enid and near Douglas, Okla.

Bud attended Carrier High School and worked in the maintenance department for several school district.

He was a veteran of the Korean War and a published poet.

He lived most of his life in Enid and Kremlin, Oklahoma, and Missouri.

Bud had a great sense of humor and loved telling stories, writing poetry, fishing and reading the Bible.

Bud is survived by his daughters, Cindy Davis of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and Robin Tucker of Oklahoma City; sisters, Helen Dian Hess and husband Harry Goss of Tulsa, and Shirley Ann Hess and husband Bob Pohle of Dayton, Ohio; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Bud was preceded in death by wives, Virginia Stovall and Donna Carlton; son, Mark Hess; and half-sister, Loretta Long.
