Virgel Andrew Garis
October 23, 1920 ~ June 14, 2010


Virgel Andrew Garis, 89-year-old Enid OK resident, died June 14, 2010, at St Mary's Regional Medical Center, Enid OK. Virgel was born in McDougal AR on November 23, 1920, the son of John Franklin and Freddie Mae [Lincoln] Garis.

He met Lucille Latta in 1944 and courted her in a used Model A Ford Coupe. The couple married in Clay County AR on April 13, 1946.

Virgel farmed until 1950 when he moved to Enid, where he worked for Rock Island Railroad for 10 years as a carpenter on bridges and buildings. In 1960, he began working for the Enid Board of Education as support personnel. He worked there until his retirement in 1985.

He and Lucille built a house on Carrier Road in 1965 where they lived until 2006.

Virgel was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church for over 35 years, a member of Red Carpet Woodcarvers, National Woodcarvers Association, Enid Support Personnel and Enid Art Association. His hobbies were woodcarving, gardening, and winning ribbons at the Enid State Fair. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters, one daughter, and one granddaughter. Virgel is survived by his wife, Lucille, of 64 years; daughter Charlotte Weaver; sons Thomas Garis, and Timothy Garis and wife Terese; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Virgel loved the outdoors, his church, and his family. Our loss is Heavens' gain.

Lucille L. [Latta] Garis
April 16, 1926 ~ June 20, 2015


The celebration of life for Lucille Latta Garis, 89 year-old Enid resident will be 1:00 PM Friday, June 26, 2015 in the First Baptist Church. Dr James Weidman will officiate. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home.

There will be a visitation with family Thursday evening from 5 PM-7 PM in the Henninger-Hinson Chapel at 601 W. Broadway.

Lucille was born April 16, 1926 in Pollard, Arkansas to Charles Robert Latta and Delia Bell [Thompson] Latta and died Saturday, June 20, 2015 in the Commons at the age of 89.

She attended High School at Piggot, Arkansas and took the Arkansas State teacher's exam and taught for five years while attending SBC at Pocahontas Arkansas, and Arkansas State College at Jonesboro.

On April 13, 1946 she married Virgil Andrew Garis and to this union four children were born.

After moving to Enid in 1950 she was a homemaker and later began working at Bass Hospital as an LPN. She was in the first LPN class at Autry Vo-Tec. Her favorite places to work in the hospital were surgery, Obstetrics, and Pediatrics. She retired in 1989 after almost 30 years.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Womens Missionary Union, and teacher of the T.E.L. Sunday School Class for several years.

She is survived by her children; Charlotte Weaver, Thomas Garis, and Timothy Garis and wife Terese, 10 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and 11 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded by her husband, Virgil Garis, her parents, one daughter, three brothers, one sister, and two granddaughters.

ENID - Graveside Services will be 4 p.m., Friday, November 20, 2020, Memorial Park Cemetery, Pastor Jeff Enabnitt officiating.

Carolyn was born on December 5, 1948 in Enid, Oklahoma, the daughter of John and Hattie [Maynard] Sparks.

She was married to Don Garis.

She passed away peacefully on November 18, 2020 at her residence.
