93 – year old strip pioneer dies Tuesday

Built many early day Enid Holmes; rites Thursday

Garfield County pioneer, W. D. Elgin, 93, died in a local hospital at noon Tuesday.

He made the run into the Cherokee Strip in 1893 and staked his claim between the towns of Covington and Marshall in Garfield County.

This year, a few hours after the Cherokee Strip Celebration, which he attended, Elgin fell, injuring his hip. He never recovered.

He had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Jeanne McConnell K for the past 12 years.

A native native of Howard County, Missouri, he was born on a farm.

Elgin was formerly a contractor and built many of Enid's early homes and was noted as an exceptionally fine cabinetmaker.

He was a member of the Central Christian Church, the Cherokee Strip Association, and Modern Woodmen of America.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Watson, Kansas City, Missouri; Mrs. Frances Rogers, Ft. Scott, Kansas; and Mrs. Gene (Willie) McConkay of Enid; a son, Coleman H. of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren and 13 great – grandchildren.

Services will be 2 PM Thursday in the Henninger – Allen Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Byron R. Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

The body will lie in state in the funeral home chapel until service time. The casket will remain closed following the services.

Friends who wish to do so may make contributions to the Cherokee Strip Museum in lieu of other remembrances. Henninger – Allen Funeral Home will act as custodian of this fund.
