ENID — Funeral service for George Leonard Edwards will be 11 a.m. today, Feb. 5, 2011, at Central Christian Church with Revs. John McLemore and Don Johnson officiating. Burial to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Henninger-Hinson Funeral Home.

Leonard was born Sept. 15, 1924, on a farm south of Douglas to G.L. and Rose (Wegmiller) Edwards and died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011, in Enid.

He graduated from Douglas High School in 1942 and attended John Brown University of Siloam Springs, Ark., on a scholarship from Union Equity Co-Operative Exchange of Enid.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1949, he graduated from Phillips University.

In 1950, Leonard married Dorothy Cinnamon of Garber in Central Christian Church of Enid. He was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather.

While attending Phillips University, he worked summers at Union Equity. He retired as vice-president of grain marketing at Union Equity Co-Operative Elevators in 1987, after 40 years of service.

Leonard earned many awards and honors while working in the grain business. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Grain Industry Hall of Fame and served as president on the board of the Oklahoma Grain and Feed Dealers Association. He was a longtime member of American Legion. He served on the Central Christian Church Housing Foundation Board at the time Meadows Point Apartments were built. He served on Enid Public School Board at the time Autry Vo-Tech School was built. He served as president of Phillips University Alumni Association.

Leonard was a charter member of Willow Road Christian Church. He served as chairman of the board for the first three terms and held various offices during his 36 years there. In 1992, he became a member again of Central Christian Church. He was always devoted to his family and church.

Surviving are his daughter, Janis Lynn Edwards of Enid; son, James Leonard Edwards and wife Carolyn Kay of Franklin, Tenn.; grandson, Steven James Edwards of Franklin, Tenn.; and sister, Mary Ellen Haworth and husband Neal of Weatherford, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; sister, Ruth Loesch; and brother, Vernon Edwards.

Memorials can be made through the funeral home to Central Christian Church.
