The funeral service for Melvin L. Eckert, 100, of Golden Oaks Assisted Living, Enid, Okla., will be held today, Feb. 26, 2007, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Rev. Paul Hass will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.

Melvin was born Sept. 4, 1906, in Venedy, Ill. to Edward and Caroline (Muenter) Eckert and died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, at Integris Bass Baptist Health Center.

At age one, Melvin moved with his parents to Fairmont, Okla. where he attended parochial school and was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Fairmont, Okla. on March 20, 1921. Melvin was baptized on Sept. 23, 1906 at St. Salvador Lutheran Church at Venedy, Ill.

Melvin married Anna Ruppel on Sept. 18, 1938, at Zion Lutheran Church of Fairmont, Okla. They moved to Adair, Okla. in 1948 where they attended Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Melvin farmed until 1969. In 1969, Melvin and Ana moved to Claremore where they attended Redeemer Lutheran Church and he worked for Claremore Progress newspaper as well as the Claremore Nursing Home and Rogers County Health Department. In 1979, they moved to Enid where he did yard work and odd jobs. His wife died in 2001.

Melvin was nominated king of Golden Oaks in 2004. Melvin was very active at Golden Oaks and a friend to everyone and always helping people out there. Melvin was a great gardener and flower lover. He loved to do latch work and made many rugs.

He did a lot of babysitting before he ever got into a nursing home. He cared for Missy Connor and Dustin Connor for many years and called them his grandchildren.

Melvin was the oldest member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Enid.

Melvin will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was a wonderful father, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Surviving are his children, Geneva and Bill Estes, Enid, Okla.; three step grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren; and two step great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son-in-law, Elmer Tefft; three brothers; and four sisters.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or St. Paul’s Lutheran School with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home as custodian of the funds.
