© Enid News and Eagle Enid, Oklahoma May 11, 2011 May 8, 1915 ~ May 8, 2011 Glenda Ellen Cole died Sunday, May 8, 2011, on her 96th birthday. She was born May 8, 1915, in the Kremlin-Hillsdale area to George Franklin Whitehead and Georgia Ellen Hennis Whitehead. Glenda was the youngest of four children: Veda Goldie Maxey and Kenneth Howard Whitehead preceded her in death. Viola May Dustin of Perkins still survives. She graduated from Enid High School in 1935 and married Harold Lee Cole on January 20, 1936. They moved to Cherokee in 1938. Together they opened Cole's Nursery and soon after funeral directors appealed to them to put in a flower shop so the townspeople wouldn't have to go to Kansas to get fresh flowers. The flower shop began in the basement and later moved to the present shop and became Cole's Flowers, they owned the shop until 1972. Her husband, Harold Cole, passed away November 2, 1980. Glenda was able to celebrate the shop's 50th anniversary in 1988 and she continued to work at the flower shop until her move to Golden Oaks Village in 2002. She was a member of First Christian Church in Cherokee. She loved to paint and design all things beautiful. Glenda was a volunteer at Alfalfa County Hospital. She enjoyed playing cards and was a member of many clubs, including Mother's Self Culture Club. She also was a 50-year member of Eastern Star. Glenda lived her life with much joy and love, she will be missed dearly by all that knew her. Glenda is survived by her daughter, Ellen Kay McCracken of Enid; her son, George H. Cole and wife Becky Cole of Cherokee; her granddaughter, Aimee McCracken of Yukon; and a dear family friend, A.J. Petree of Enid. >Burial will be 3 p.m. today, May 12, 2011, in Memorial Park Cemetery. A celebration of her life will follow at 4 p.m. at Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. "Jim" Cole, 82, of Enid, will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at Brown-Cummings Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Shorty Unruh officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Jim was born March 12, 1929, in Norway, Mich., to Earl J. and Gladys J. Ebeling Cole and died Friday, May 20, 2011, at Integris Bass Baptist Health Center. He attended school in Norway and Queens, N.Y., until the family moved to Shawnee, Okla., where he graduated from Shawnee High School in 1947. He attended Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee. While living in Shawnee, he worked for Ed Hardesty Plumbing and later for Shawnee Country Club. He later served in the U.S. Army Infantry during the Korean War. He married Mildred Ruth Morehead August 2, 1951, in Canadian, Texas. In 1960 they moved to Enid where he owned and operated Cole Finance until 1982. He then became a truck driver for Hampton Trucking in Hennessey, Okla., later working for Cryogenic Liquid Gases until 1995, when he retired. He was preceded in death by Mildred on August 27, 2010. He was a member of Shawnee First Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon and later First Presbyterian Church of Enid. He was involved with the Boy Scouts in Shawnee and was past president of Briggs Evening Lions Club of Enid. He is survived by two daughters, Evelyn and husband Robin Dick of Mars, Penn., and Pam and husband Danny Hough of Afton, Okla.; three sons, Jim and wife Barbara Cole of Galesburg, Ill., Robert and wife Patty McInnis-Cole of Evergreen, Colo., and Tim Cole and wife Mary Ellen Glick of Ambler, Penn.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Lou Bryan of Edmond, Okla.; and one brother, William E. Cole of Houston, Texas. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jane Jones, formerly of Oklahoma City. Memorials in his memory may be made to Oklahoma Medical Research heart program with Brown-Cummings serving as custodian of the funds. Condolences may be made online at Brown-Cummings.com |
