Louis Alexander Chenoweth, 3302 W. Oklahoma, longtime Enid businessman and civic leader, died early today at age 89.

Chenoweth and R. J. Green purchased the Lee Music Company in 1926, establishing the Chenoweth – Green Music Company, 222 W. Randolph.

The business continued to expand, becoming one of the most well – known music firms in the area.

Chenoweth also was a founder of the Tri – State Music Festival and was renowned as and authority on musical Instruments.

During World War I, Chenoweth was the only American officer serving in the British Transport Command.

He was commander of the American Legion, Argonne Post No. 4, Pres. of the Lions Club and was an executive board member of the National Association of Music Merchants. In 1957, he became the first citizen to receive the "Outstanding Man of the Year Award" given by the Salvation Army, on whose board he served for 50 years. He was a member and Treas. of the Methodist Church.

Chenoweth was born in 1893 in Kansas and as and infant came to the Cherokee Strip with his parents, Lincoln and Martha Chenoweth. He was reared in Garber and later moved with his parents to Enid. He graduated from Enid High School in 1914 and later from Enid Business College.

He and his wife, the former Velma Warrick, had lived in Enid for 56 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Robert of Enid, and William of Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter, Vida of Wheaton, Illinois; and a sister, Velma Hord, Fort Bragg, California.

He was preceded in death by a daughter and two sisters.

Funeral services are pending with Fossett Funeral Home.
