Memorial service to celebrate the life of Vernon Gene Brakhage is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Kingfisher, Okla., with graveside service and interment following at 3:30 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery in Enid, Okla. Viewing will be 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday morning at the church in Kingfisher.

Vernon was born on the farm north of Lahoma on Jan. 11, 1932, to Herbert and Mabel (Johnson) Brakhage and was called to his eternal home by his Heavenly Father on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014, in Oklahoma City.

He attended school in Lahoma and was baptized, confirmed and married there at Zion Lutheran Church.

He married his high school sweetheart, Rosalie Mae Holz, on March 17, 1951; they were blessed with six children and celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary earlier this year.

Vernon and Rosalie moved to Kingfisher in 1957, where he began his career as a butcher and worked at the local IGA store for over 40 years. There are many who say “he always cut the meat the way I like it.” Many others say, “I remember the days I worked for Vernon.” During this time, he was also known by many for going to their farm, as part of his custom butchering business.

Following his Kingfisher retirement, when it became known that he was cutting meat again, many former local customers drove to El Reno to continue to get their meat from Vernon. He was also co-owner and operator of the Chisholm Trail Roller Skating Rink for many years. Former skaters are known to stop, sit on their front porch and visit with him and Rosalie about their roller skating days.

Vernon’s hobbies were centered on his family: having them visit him at his Lake Eufaula cabin, making items used for fishing, catching fish and then sending frozen fish fillets home with them. He enjoyed fabricating things such as swing sets, car ramps and other welding projects. He was a band and sports fan, watching when his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren participated in these activities. He continued to be a fan and followed Kingfisher basketball and football.

Those who cherish his memory include his wife, Rosalie of Kingfisher; five children, Diana (David) Martin of Edmond, daughter-in-law, Susan Brakhage of Edmond, Eddie of Elk City, Gayla (David) Heinrichs of Drummond, Dale (Kim) of Seminole, and Robin (David) Bailey of Coppell, Texas; grandchildren, Chris (Lindsey), Kyle (Shae), Kara (Doug), Jason (Montisha), Bradley (Kim), Patrick, and Sean (Phil); great-grandchildren, Austin, Dillon, Addison, Katie, Emma, Ethan, Derick, Rebekah, Jayleigh, Maddyn and Kendall; one sister, Letha Hollingsworth of Meno; two brothers, Willard (Ann) of Enid, and Charles (Michelle) of San Antonio, Texas; and one sister-in-law, Annabel West of Oklahoma City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jay; sisters, Opal and Velda; and brother, Jerry.

April 4, 1932 - March 20, 2021

Memorial service to celebrate the life of Rosalie Mae (Holz) Brakhage is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, March 25, 2021, at Matthews Funeral Home, Edmond, Okla., with graveside service and interment following at 3 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery in Enid. Viewing will be Wednesday 1-8 p.m. with the family available from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home in Edmond.

Rosalie was born on the farm in Lahoma, Okla., on April 7, 1932, to Edward and Lydia Holz and was called to her eternal home by her Heavenly Father on Saturday, March 20, 2021, in Oklahoma City.

She attended Zion Lutheran Church in Lahoma, where she was baptized, confirmed and married. Rosalie attended elementary school at Zion Lutheran Church and secondary school at Lahoma. She married her high school sweetheart, Vernon Brakhage, on March 17, 1951. They were blessed with six children: Diana, Jay, Eddie, Gayla, Dale and Robin.

Vernon and Rosalie moved to Kingfisher in 1957. Rosalie raised the children at home while Vernon worked. She made all the clothes for herself, three daughters and mother, Lydia. She also started crocheting and made afghans, stuffed animals and decorative items for family and friends. One constant over the years was Rosalie's cooking. Pies, cakes and cinnamon rolls were a favorite, and a variety of cookies were always in the freezer to be served to any visitors. The favorite of her kids, grandkids and many nieces and nephews were the porcupine meatballs she brought to all family gatherings. Rosalie enjoyed piecing and hand quilting quilts, which she was able to do well into her 80s. Over 100 quilts were given to her family members for weddings, Christmas and other special occasions.

In 1977, Vernon and Rosalie became co-owners of the Chisholm Trail Skating Rink. They operated it for seven years and former skaters were known to stop by their home to sit and visit with them about their roller skating days.

Those who cherish her memory are their five children, Diana (David) Martin of Edmond, daughter-in-law Susan Brakhage of McKinney, Texas, Eddie Brakhage of Edmond, Gayla (David) Heinrichs of Drummond, Dale (Kim) Brakhage of Seminole, and Robin (David) Bailey of Edmond; grandchildren Chris (Lindsey), Kyle (Shae), Kara (Doug), Jason (Monteshia), Bradley (Kimberly), Patrick (Sheree), and Sean (Phil); great-grandchildren Austin, Dillion, Addison, Katie, Emma, Ethan, Derek, Rebekah, Jayleigh, Maddyn, Kendall and Greta Rosalie; and one brother-in-law Charles (Michelle) Brakhage of San Antonio, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Vernon, son Jay, sisters Leola, Luella, Ruby and Annabel.

The family requests memorials be made to Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, cancer division.
