Funeral services for Verne Benell, 65, 423 W. Oak, will be at 2 PM Friday in the Henninger – Allen Chapel with Rev. Jerry W. Perryman officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of the Henninger – Allen Funeral Home.

Benell, retired detective captain of the Enid police force, was killed Monday in a car accident in Colorado.

He was born October 6, 1905 in Hillsdale. He attended schools there and was graduated from Hillsdale high school.

Benell served 28 years with the Enid police force beginning March 7, 1936, and retiring March 7, 1964. At his retirement, he was captain in charge of the detective bureau. He was employed by Champlin's as a security officer until his death.

His survivors include his wife, Esther, and a son, Steve, of the home; two sisters, Bonnie Benell, and Mrs. Frank (Bernice) Hart, both of Enid; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Beulah and Beryl, and two brothers, Floyd and Lloyd.

All active and retired police personnel will serve as pallbearers.
