Avery, 80, will be 2 PM Tuesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church with the Rev Dwayne J Schroeder officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery under direction of Brown Funeral Home. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Enid American Legion Argonne Post #4. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 PM Monday at Brown Funeral Home. He was born April 5, 1918, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to William P. and Myrtle Hudson Avery and died Friday, April 10, 1998 in the Methodist Home. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U S Army. He married Mildred Thiele on November 25, 1943, in Bishop, Texas. He was Budget and Safety Coordinator of the Products Pipeline for Champlin Petroleum Company, retiring in 1981 after 35 years of service. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, having joined in 1955, and he served in various offices and committees. He was a member of the Enid American Legion Argonne Post #4 and worked as a volunteer at St Mary's Mercy Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Mildred, of the home; two daughters, Frances Wittnebel of Nassau, Minnesota, Tamie Worthington of Columbus, Georgia; a son, Kenneth Avery of San Francisco; a sister, Mary Backtell of Alameda, California; eight grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a daughter. Memorials in his memory may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church or the charity of the donor's choice with Brown Funeral Home serving as custodian of the fund. |

© Enid News and Eagle Enid, Oklahoma June 21, 2017 March 29, 1924 ~ June 17, 2017 The funeral service celebrating the life of Mrs. Mildred Avery, 93, Enid, is 10 a.m. Saturday June 24, 2017, at Redeemer Lutheran Church of Enid with Pastor Thomas House officiating. Burial follows in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Friday June 23, 2017, at Brown-Cummings Funeral Home. Services are under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home. Mildred was born March 29, 1924, in Bishop, Texas, to Minnie and Henry Thiele. She was raised and educated in Bishop public schools, graduating from Bishop High School with the class of 1941. She attended business school in Houston, Texas, and moved to San Antonio to work. There, she met Fred Avery who was in the US Army. On November 25, 1943, she married Fred Avery in the Saint Paul Lutheran Church at Concordia near Bishop, Texas. The couple lived in San Antonio where their first child, Frances, was born. After the war, they moved to Bishop, Texas, where he was employed by The Chicago Corporation. They were blessed with a son, Kenneth, and daughter, Judy, born in Kingsville, Texas. In 1955, they moved to Enid where Fred was employed by Champlin. They were blessed in 1963 with a daughter, Tamara. They joined Redeemer Lutheran Church in 1955, where she was a very active member. She was also active in Mary Martha, the Lutheran Women's Missionary League chapter at Redeemer. She also served as church secretary for many years. She was a long-time volunteer at St Mary's in Enid. She is survived by daughters: Frances and husband Robert Wittnebel of Nassau, Minn., Tamie and husband David Worthington of Fayetteville, Ga., son: Ken Avery and Jim Skeen of San Francisco, Calif., son-in-law: Thomas Pyle of Franklin, N.C., eight grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both parents, husband, and daughter Judy, son-in-law Wayne Irsch, and brother Henry Thiele. Memorials may be made in her honor to Redeemer Lutheran Church, with Brown-Cummings Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds. |
