Born Tommy Lee Short. He was the son of Ruth Wheeler and Luke Short. This is according to his Social Security application.

Ruth Wheeler was my brother-in-law's great aunt.

The family story is that she and Luke were only married a few years and her 2 sons were living with other relatives.

Floyd was going by the name Abbott and living with his grandmother and her 2nd husband in 1940. He had a brother Donald that was adopted by their grandfather and his 2nd wife and went by the name Wheeler.
