Funeral service for Max DeWayne Phelan, 88, of Covington, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at St. Paul’s Church of Marshall, with Pastor Bill Bergner officiating. Committal prayers and interment will follow in North Lions Cemetery under the kind guidance of Amy Stittsworth Funeral Service. Military graveside rites will be coordinated by the United States Army. Visitation with the family will be 6-8 p.m. today at Stittsworth’s. Max was born March 8, 1924, in Marshall, Okla., the son of Frank H. and Gerna Keeler Phelan and passed away peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, in Enid.

Max was raised and educated in Marshall, graduating from Marshall High School with the class of 1943. Max married Thelma Fay Shaffer in Enid on Dec. 24, 1942. Max served his country in the United States Army during World War II, serving in France and Germany.

He married Bonnie Hill in Marshall on Jan. 27, 1991. He was a farmer in the Marshall area, worked for Conoco, and worked for Bank of Marshall for 25 years, retiring as president. He was a member of Marshall Christian Church, Lovell Round-Up Club, Lions Club of Marshall, I.O.O.F., served as fire chief of Marshall, grand marshall of Prairie City Days and Marshall school board member.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie of the residence; son, Mike Phelan of Enid; daughters, Denise Bergner of Edmond and Diane Cue of Crescent; stepchildren, Jim Hill of Kremlin, Troy Hill of Ada, John Hill of Sedan, Kan., Lila Davis of Enid, Teresa Pearson of Covington, and Mary Craig of Drummond; brother, Harold Phelan of Crescent; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Max was preceded in passing by his parents, two sisters and one brother.
