Charles Otto Burchardt
February 9, 1933 - October 3, 2010
Charles Otto Burchardt, 77, of Marshall, died October 3, 2010, at Greenbrier in Enid. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, October 8, 2010, at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Marshall with Rev. Dan Thimell and Rev. Leon Seaton officiating. Burial will follow in the Marshall Lions North Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday October 7th with family present from 5-7 p.m. at Abernathy Aaron Funeral Home in Crescent.
Charles was born February 9, 1933 in Crescent, Oklahoma to August and Catherene Burchardt. He graduated from Marshall High School in 1951, Elmhurst College in 1955, Eden Theological Seminary in 1960. Charles was ordained at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Marshall in 1959. He received his Masters of Divinity from Eden Theological Seminary in 1967. Charles was an active minister of the United Church of Christ for 36 years serving churches in Kansas, Texas, Illinois, and Missouri. He also served as an interim minister in Weatherford, Oklahoma following retirement.
Charles married Jane Bryson in Stillwater on December 21, 1953. They made their first home in Elmhurst, IL where Charles continued his education. Charles made significant contributions to the church conferences where he served. He began his ministry at a small rural church in Hesston, Kansas, after which he served a church in Spring, Texas becoming very active as director of youth camps. Charles initiated a new church building program at the church in Atwood, Illinois as well as work projects at Pilgrim Park in Princeton, Illinois and an adult work project in Honduras. While in St. Louis at St. Phillips church he collaborated another church building expansion helping make room for more Sunday school classes and daycare. Charles was an active member of Lions Club International where he held executive positions in the clubs of the communities he resided. He was a member and president of the Kiwanis International Club while in the St. Louis area. Charles loved spending time with his family, working on stained glass and fishing with his best friend Earl Wunsche.
Surviving are his wife Jane (Bryson); children, Cindy Cordts and husband Don of Atwood, IL and Rita Fulton and husband Dave of Millstadt, IL; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren; sister, Dorthea Jean Miller of Kingfisher; nieces and nephews as well as many cousins.
Preceded in death by his parents and an infant son Paul Allen.
