Betty L. and Ralph Major Jr. BRIDAL

North I O O F Cemetery

ENID, Okla. — Betty Lee (Pownell) Bridal passed away Friday, Oct., 19, 2012, at Oklahoma Heart Hospital in Oklahoma City, Okla. She was born April 28, 1922, in Douglas, Okla., the youngest of four children, to Homer and Myrtle (Plotner) Pownell.

She attended rural Hopewell School, where she was the student of her oldest sister Dorothy in grades 6-8. Following graduation from Douglas High School, she attended Enid Business College and worked for a short time at Oklahoma Tire and Supply Co.

She met Ralph Bridal at a "honky tonk" dance and dated for 10 months before their marriage on June 30, 1940.

She and Ralph farmed until WWII began, and he enlisted. She followed his moves about the United States until he was shipped to the European Theater. She smilingly related that while he was at Fort Meade, Md., she worked in Calvert Distillery, putting labels on the bottles.

After the war, they farmed and Betty worked as a nurse aide in Guthrie, Okla., Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City, and finally retired from Deaconess Hospital after 19 years. But she didn't really retire, as she began volunteer work at Manor Care Nursing Home.

She moved to Southern Plaza Retirement Center in Bethany, Okla., in 2004, to settle down a bit. She enjoyed her friends and neighbors there and especially playing (and winning) Bingo. Everyone knew her for her get-up-and-go attitude and friendly spirit.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; an infant son, Howard Dee Bridal ; brother, Hugh; sisters, Dorothy Brown and Nina Lemon; and sisters-in-law, Marcelyn ( Bridal ) Goslin and Janice ( Bridal ) Prosser.

She is survived by sons, Donald and wife Camie Bridal of Hooker, Okla., and Richard Bridal of Oklahoma City, and a number of nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at Memorial Christian Church, 1915 North Meridian Ave., Oklahoma City. A private interment service will be held in Marshall Lions Cemetery-North, Marshall, Okla. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie. At the family's request, the casket will not be open at any time.

Memorials may be made to the memorial fund at Memorial Christian Church or the charity of your choice.
