James W. Vater, Jr.

James W. "Jim" Vater Jr., 56, died early Thursday in an Oklahoma City hospital following a brief illness.

Vater was born in Enid February 20, 1925 and attended St. Joseph's School here. After graduating from high school, he attended St. Benedict's College at Atchison, Kansas, a year then entered the U.S. Army, serving in the European Theater during World War I I.

After his discharge, Vater returned to St. Benedict's for a year, then transferred to Oklahoma University where he graduated with a degree in petroleum engineering.

He and Doris Boyle were married September 27, 1947, in Enid. They lived in Fort Worth, Texas, for some 18 years before moving to Oklahoma City in 1974.

At the time of his death, Vater was vice president of operations and production for the Beard Oil Company.

He was a member of St. Eugene Catholic Church in Oklahoma City.

Vater is survived by his wife Doris of the home; a daughter, Nancy (Mrs. Kirk) Pankratz, Weatherford; a son, Brian Vater of the home; four sisters, Helen (Mrs. John) Berry, Wichita, Kansas, Mary Margaret (Mrs. Eddie) Mailloux, Fort Worth, Lois (Mrs. Joe) Haney, San Antonio, Texas, and Theresa (Mrs. Ernest J.) Trojan of Bison. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Louise Murphy.

Recitation of the Rosary will be at 7:30 PM Friday in St. Eugene Church in Oklahoma City with Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM Saturday in the same church with the Rev. Gerard MacAulay as director.

Graveside rites and burial will be at 1:30 PM Saturday in the Calvary Cemetery in Enid, with the Rev. Lowell Stieferman officiating. All arrangements are under the direction of the Henninger – Allen Funeral Home.
