The funeral for Celestine J. Vater, 78, who died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital, will be at 10 AM Thursday in St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church.

Father Paul H. Gallatin will officiate. Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery, under the direction of the Henninger – Allen Funeral Home.

Born to John J. And Mary O Shaughnessey Vater October 17, 1904, he was the youngest of nine children.

He moved to Enid during the late 1920s. In 1928, Vater married Mary Ryan, who died in 1978.

He cofounded Vater Implement Co. after several years of owning the Vater Oil & Tire Co. He retired in 1967 when he sold his business to his nephew, Joe Vater.

Vater was a member of St. Francis Parish and had been awarded the 50 – year membership pin in the Enid chapter of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by a son, Jerry, Enid; a daughter, Mary "Mitzie" MacDonald, Galena, Illinois; a sister, Anna Keohl, Salisbury, Missouri and nine grandchildren.

Other than his wife, Vater was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.

Memorials in his name may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation with the Henninger – Allen Funeral Home acting as custodian.

Mrs. Celestine J. (Mary) Vater, 74, died in a local nursing home late Friday evening.

Wake Bible services will be at 7 PM today in the Henninger – Allen Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 PM Monday in St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. Gary W Kayler officiating.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

She was born November 12, 1903, in Kansas City Missouri, and raised there. She attended St. Aloysius school.

The former Mary Ryan, she married C. J. Vater on August 2, 1928, in Kansas City, and they moved to Enid in January 1929.

She was an active member of St. Francis Xavier church while her health permitted. She was a member of the Altar Society, the St. Cecelia Study Club and the National Council of Catholic Women.

She was chairman of Enid's first women's meeting of the National Council of Christian and Jews. She was also active in St. Joseph's School's mother's club.

She was preceded in death by twin sons.

Survivors include her husband, Celestine, 429 S. Hayes; one son, Jerry Vater, Enid; a daughter, Mitzie Vater McDonald, Galena, Illinois; nine grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Catherine Gladbach, Kansas City, Kansas.
