Mary Glahn Haugherty

Mary Glahn Haugherty was born May 22, 1895 and departed this life on Friday, January 26, 2001. This remarkable 105 year-old lady had the joy of always remaining in her own home due to the cooperation of the whole family. Mary was a gifted teacher imparting to youngsters her real-life events spanning the period from the horse and buggy era, transition from Oklahoma Territory to Statehood, both World Wars, the Great Depression, rebuffing the KKK, Prohibition, the scourge of diphtheria and polio, the blessing of antibiotics and the advent of space exploration. Mary's father was Joseph Glahn of Alva. Her mother Angie Bates Glahn was reared on an east Medford farm, which was obtained through the Land Run of September, 1893. Her parents moved to Enid to obtain a Catholic education for their children from the Sisters of Divine Providence. Mary attended Enid's original St. Joseph's school, which was built in 1904. Upon graduation, she entered Philip's University and later received her teaching credentials. She loved children and taught in several one-room schools.

Mary was the widow of Hugh P. Haugherty, whom she married May 22, 1917 in the Roman Catholic Church of St. Francis Xavier in Enid, Oklahoma. Her husband was the son of Charles and Winifred Ann Traynor Haugherty. His grandparents were John and Elizabeth Traynor who came from Ireland in 1867. Hugh's grandparents made the Land Run in 1889 and created a homestead southeast of Hennessey, Oklahoma. Mary and Hugh were married fifty-six years before Hugh's death.

They were the parents of one son and three daughters. Surviving her are daughters Mary Modesta Haugherty Stewart and Roselynn Shannon Haugherty Smith reside in Oklahoma City. Leo Glahn of Baton Rouge, Louisana is Mary's only surviving brother. He was known for indulging his sister's fondness for gold jewelry.

Preceding her in death are her son Hugh Jr. and daughter, Angela Haugherty Stratton; and brothers Joseph, Herman, John W., Leonard and Robert Glahn.

Mary retained the company, love and affection of her sons-in-law, John Q. Stratton and Charles D. Smith. She had six devoted grandchildren, John Michael Stratton, Stephen L. Stratton, Bryan L. Frye Sr., Stephany Smith Blood, Hugh Haugherty Smith and Charles Phillip Smith. There are thirteen great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

Special thanks to niece Mary Jane Glahn Swartz, niece Carol Louise Glahn Marks, nephew Joseph Glahn and the many steadfast friends exemplified by the Louis R. Wilson family.
