Roland K. "Dutch" DIESTERWEG

Calvary Catholic Cemetery


The homecoming service for Roland K "Dutch" Diesterweg will be Monday, July 11, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Ladusau-Evans Chapel. Rev. Bill Mucker, Sr will officiate. Burial will follow at the Calvary Cemetery. Arrangement entrusted to Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.

Dutch was born on June 1, 1921 in Harper, KS to Roland and Mae Metzen Diesterweg and died at St. Mary's Regional Hospital July 8, 2005. In 1927 he moved to Enid with his family and attended St. Joseph's, Emerson Jr. High, and Enid High School. After graduating from St. Joseph's Academy, Dutch attended Oklahoma State A & M. After his time at OSU he went to Wichita to work in the aircraft industry.

After obtaining his private pilot's license, Dutch joined the Army Air Corp/US Air Force serving in WWII and the Korean conflict. His assignments included instructing the first class of women, WAPS in Houston and served as a maintenance officer.

In 1942 he married Beverly Covington and had one daughter, Kay Hubbard Pearce. While serving at Craig AFB, he met and married his second wife, Helen Horton, September 14, 1951 and they had one daughter, Susan.

After separating from the Air Force at the rank of Major, he returned to Enid to work with his father at Diesterweg Sign Co. During this time Dutch and his father also manufactured the gas and electric powered "Diester" edgers in the Northwest OK area. Dutch eventually began working as a salesman for Finnegan Collins/Enid Lincoln Mercury. After retiring from the car business he completed his career at the Bank of Kremlin until January 2005. Dutch enjoyed playing and watching golf, OSU athletics and spending time with his daughter, Susan Shields, and grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan Shields of Chester, OK; three grandchildren: Eli and his wife Shannon Shields of Wichita, KS, Shemiah and her husband Aaron Murphy of Tulsa, OK and Seth Shields of Fresno, CA; and three great grandchildren: Colin, Karsten and Kendall.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and dear friend, Nelda Clinesmith.

His family remembers him as a loving father, grandfather, orator and mentor. Anyone who knew him will remember him for the ability to tell a great story.

Memorials may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation ??Heart Division with the funeral home as custodian of the funds. Remembrances may be sent to ladusau-evans.com.
