Requiem Mass for former Enid, Okla., resident, Leota Mary Ayer, 97, of Frederick, Okla., will be 9 a.m. Thursday, May 7, 2015, at St. Helen Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father James Wickersham officiating. Graveside and burial will follow at 3 p.m. at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Enid, with the Rev. Father Joe Irwin officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home of Frederick.

Mrs. Ayer passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2015, in Frederick.

Leota Mary Scheier Ayer was born June 26, 1917, in Wichita, Kan., to Lewis and Mary Honora (Mitchell) Scheier.

She attended school in Roy, N.M., and graduated from Roy High School in 1934.

She was united in marriage to Charles Maurice Ayer on May 10, 1941, in Roy. He preceded her in death on July 12, 1977.

She had worked at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Okla., from 1956-1977 in the accounting and finance department. She moved to Frederick in 1984 to be close to her daughter.

Leota enjoyed crocheting, reading, doing needlepoint and volunteering at the church. She was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church in Frederick.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Couger of Frederick; two sons, Paul Ayer and wife Sumiko of Kansas City, Mo., and Neil Ayer and wife Teresa of Iowa City, Iowa; one brother, Joseph Scheier of Seiling; four grandchildren, Jason Ayer of Guymon, Okla., Cathy Ruiz of Lee’s Summit, Mo., Natalie Bulick of Terre Haute, Ind., and Brian Couger of Stillwater; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles Ayer; one son-in-law, Guy Couger; four brothers, Lawerence, Virgil, Paul Scheier and a baby brother, who died in infancy; four sisters, Julia Lusk, Josephine Markosky, Margaret Scheier and Loretta Morey; and one grandson, Gerard Ayer.

A Rosary will be 7 p.m. Wednesday evening, May 6, 2015, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Helen’s Ladies Guild or to Father Kalivela — St. John’s Boarding Home at BancFirst, ATTN: Dannette Wittrock, P.O. Box 419, Kingfisher, OK 73750, in memory of Leota Ayer.

Charles M. (Charlie) Ayer, 60, 1010 N, Seventh, died late Tuesday in a local hospital following a lengthy illness. A Wake service will be at 7 PM Friday in the Henninger – Allen Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral mass will be Saturday at 10 AM in the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with the Rev. Marvin F. Leven officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Ayer was born June 15, 1917, at Rollins, Wyoming. When a young boy, he moved with his parents to New Mexico where he graduated from high school. He was employed there following graduation, and married Leota Scheier of Roy. They established their first home there, and later lived in Wichita, Kansas, prior to moving to Enid in 1953.

Ayer owned and operated the P & A Meat Market until 1967, and was later employed by both Ideal and Long's at Lahoma before retiring in 1971. He was a veteran of World War I I, serving with the United States Army, and a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Leota; two sons, Paul, with the United States Marine Corp in Okinawa, and Neil, also with the United States Marine Corp in Japan; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Ann Ayer, of the home; four grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Marian Menapace, Maxwell, New Mexico.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
