Violet Lucille Bergner Turner of Vici, Oklahoma was born June 7, 1919 in Dacoma, Oklahoma to Harry E. and Mary E. (Young) Bergner of German-Russia descent. Violet died December 14, 2016 at the Vici Nursing Home at the age of ninety-seven. She had a twin brother Harold Lee and an older brother Floyd. They grew up on a farm. She began school in the Red Bird School and then they moved to the Mutual area. She attended the Sibel Country School, then Mutual High School and graduated with the Class of 1938. She loved playing basketball and was voted most outstanding player. After graduating she went to one semester of college at Alva. Times were hard so she returned home to work. She worked at Milford Stow Grocery then Best Way Grocery and finally Milberns Mercantile for many years.

She was united in marriage to George Talton Turner on March 10, 1941. Their home was established in Vici and they were blessed with three children Gary, Kathy, and Jan. Together they operated the Vici Theater until “television” replaced the small-town motion picture business. They purchased the Mercantile in 1963 and renamed it “Vici Dry Goods” and together they operated the business eighteen years. After retirement, they traveled many places and made new friends.

Violet enjoyed her home and community of seventy-five years. Her friends, neighbors, and family knew her to be friendly and vivacious in action and in spirit! She was easily teased and quick to laugh. Many people, customers, family, and friends alike have stories they love to tell about her. She loved sitting on her front porch with family and Anna her next-door neighbor and friend. She made her family feel special, like you were the only thing that mattered. Holidays were celebrated and she cooked our favorites, her noodles, coconut pie, and chocolate delight. She hosted Sunday dinners, Easter Egg Hunts, and Birthday parties for her family. Her greatest joy was when the first ones arrived and the last light was turned off.

Violet enjoyed quilting and creating afghans. Because of her hobby, we all have beautiful quilts, pillows, and other crafts to grace our homes. She is also a great sports fan, and hosted many a game party for her grandsons and great grandsons, and she would let the rest of us come too! Violet played many card games through the years with her Vici and Mutual friends and her family, and continued with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. By the time she played with the great grandkids, she was known to cheat!

Violet had a serious side also. Her commitment was to her Lord and Savior. She was a member of the Vici Christian Church and served in many ministries through the years. In her late years, after giving up crossword puzzles, the daily paper, and card playing, Wheel of Fortune was a favorite. She was a good puzzle solver to the end. On her last evening, the first puzzle was “forget me not”!

She is now in her eternal home with Jesus living in peace.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children Gary Turner and wife Debbie of Sugarland, Texas, Kathy Adams and husband Gary of Woodward, Oklahoma, and Jan Schmitz and husband Randy of Weatherford, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren Russell and Leatha Adams, Ronny and Daisy Adams, Rhonda and Darin Ratliff, Tracy and Bryan Rogers, Chris and Nikki Schmitz, Lindsey and Todd Harris, and Nathan Turner; twelve great grandchildren; two special nieces Louise Jones and Carolyn Swallow; numerous nieces, nephews, other family, and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband George Turner, her parents Harry and Mary Bergner, brothers Harold and Floyd Bergner, sister-in-law Verda Lou Bergner, one grandson Andrew Turner, and numerous other Turners and Bergners.
