Irma May (Barten) Peck

Irma May (Barten) Peck
December 18, 1922 ~ December 13, 2020

Irma May Peck was born December 18, 1922, in Leedey, Oklahoma, to William B. and Grace (Gibbs) Barten. She died, surrounded by loved ones, at her family’s home, on December 13, 2020, in Leedey, OK, at the age of 97 years, just five days shy of her 98th birthday.

Irma grew up in Leedey, graduated from Butler High School, and was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. It was through school and church that she developed many relationships that lasted her lifetime. One of these was her husband, J. W. “Buddy” Peck.

Buddy and Irma were married on May 25, 1941. Irma spent most of her married life in the Leedey and Butler areas, raising children, and helping her husband run the farm, custom harvesting, and racehorse operations. Irma was the definition of a Proverbs 31 wife, devoting herself to her husband and children, spending hours at the sewing machine, stove, and barn, making clothes, food, and gathering milk for her large family. She also dedicated herself to doing the work of the church, in the way she believed most pleasing to God; tending to the sick, elderly, lonely, and less fortunate.

She was a tremendous woman of God, homemaker, entertainer, cook, seamstress, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She was known not just for her cooking, but for her ability to make something special from nothing special; for her opinionated outspokenness, her feistiness, her ornery sense of humor, her incredible longevity, and for her ability to see beauty in the smallest of elements God gave us, like the dew on the garden web, the smell of rain on the field, and the snow on the cedar.

Irma is preceded in death by her husband (J.W. “Buddy” Peck), her daughter (Lynette Peck-Hill), her parents (William B. and Grace Barten), her brother (Chris Barten), and two sisters (Irene Graybill and Moneta Tullis).

Irma is survived by two sisters, (Clara Donna Boone of Mansfield, TX and Margaret Craig of Killeen, TX), a son (Dennis Peck of Cushing), three daughters (Parxciene Moore of Edmond, Cheryl Peck-Donley of Leedey, and Donita Peck of Oklahoma City), eight grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.

Irma leaves behind a legacy of family that continues her love of God, discipleship, worship, family, home, love, and service to others.
