Theodore Leon "Ted" Fariss
September 22, 1942 ~ January 9, 2014

Theodore (Ted) Leon Fariss, son of Medlin Holmes Fariss, Jr., and Lola Faye (McCaslin) Fariss, was born in Elk City, Oklahoma, September 22, 1942. He passed from this life Thursday, January 9, 2014, in M.D. Anderson Hospital, Houston, Texas, at the age of 71 years.

Ted, was born a fourth generation Fariss to call the Trail Flats, on the South Canadian River home. He attended Leedey Schools, graduating in the Class of 1960. He was active in FFA, showing livestock, and working with his parents and sister, Linda, on the farm. After high school, he attended Oklahoma State University where he was involved in Block and Bridal and the Livestock Judging Team. He graduated in 1965 with a double major in Animal Science and Agriculture Education.

His first teaching job was at Cordell Public Schools where he was the Vocational Agriculture Instructor. While teaching in Cordell, Ted met and married Robetha Dianne Myers, daughter of J.T. and Alice Gray (Holder) Myers, on June 27, 1965, in Cordell. Ted and Robetha began a life of agriculture, banking, and athletics. To this union, Monty Ted Fariss was born in Cordell on October 13, 1967. Ted continued to teach in Cordell and worked for a time as 4-H Extension Agent in Washita County before the family moved to the Fariss family farm, April 1, 1969, where he resided the remainder of his life.

On December 13, 1970, Valerie Aldene Fariss was born to make their family complete. Ted went to work at the Bank of Western Oklahoma on July 1, 1990, where he was Chief Operating Officer and served on the board of directors, in addition to his farming and ranching. He was appointed to the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation Commission in 1990 by Governor David Walters and has since been reappointed by Governor Frank Keating as well as Governor Brad Henry. He has served as chairman since 2000. Ted has also served on the Agriculture Enhancement and Diversification board, OSU Animal Science Alumni Board, Oklahoma FFA Foundation Board, Elk City Expo Committee, Western Oklahoma Heifer Show Committee, and assists with various livestock shows. He was a life member of the OSU alumni and OSU Animal Science Alumni. He was a member of the Sirloin Club, Oklahoma Cattlemen’s and Western Oklahoma Bankers Association. He was past president of the Cordell Rotary Club, past president of the Dewey County OSU Alumni Association, and past worthy patron of the Order of Eastern Star and recently inducted into the Dewey County Historical Society Hall of Fame. Ted Fariss made a commitment of Faith in Christ and was a member of the Leedey First United Methodist Church where he faithfully attended and served his entire life.

He is preceded in death by one sister Linda Faye (Fariss) Lauder. Those left to cherish his memory and legacy are his loving wife, Robetha Fariss, one son, Monty Ted Fariss and his wife Jana (Maroney) Fariss of Oklahoma City, one daughter Valerie Aldene Fariss, of Cordell, one grandson, Monty Chance Fariss and his wife Madison (Goelz) Fariss of Oklahoma City, and one granddaughter Brinn Rees Fariss, of Oklahoma City, Brother-in-law Sherm Lauder and his wife Cheryl, Brother-in-law Eddie Myers and his wife Barb, nephew, Ryan Lauder and his wife Kandi and their children Kayden and Maylin, niece Stacy (Lauder) Villines and her husband Dr. Nathan Villines and their children Ethan, Reece and Jayce, nephew Ricky Myers and his wife Jill and their children Elizabeth (Myers) Annen and her husband Joe and Jessica (Myers) Ecklor and her husband Nick, niece, Lorena Myers, and nephew Danny Myers as well as a number of dear relatives and a great number of friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday January 15, 2014 at 1:30 pm at the Leedey High School Gym, Leedey, Oklahoma with interment following in Evergreen Cemetery, Leedey, Oklahoma.
