Dwight Frederick Spies, age 95, passed away peacefully August 8, 2020 in Rifle, CO. Due to COVID-19, the family will announce a memorial at a later date.

Dwight was born August 23, 1924 in Seiling, OK, and he married Norma Jean “Tootsie” Hollensbe on Sept. 17, 1946 in Covington, OK. Together they raised three children including their twin sons, Randolph “Randy” Wells and William “Bill” Henry and daughter Deborah Jean (Onorofskie).

Dwight served in the Navy as a Seabee, Second Class from 1943 to 1946 where he toured in the South Pacific. He and his wife owned and operated The Dewey County News in Seiling, OK and the Booker News in Booker, TX. Dwight and Norman Jean then purchased Perryton Printing in Perryton, TX which they owned and operated together until retirement. Never one to stay idle for long, in “retirement” he plowed fields for local ranchers until he moved to Glenwood Springs, CO in 2014.

Dwight was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Norma Jean; two sons, Randy and Bill Spies; his parents Edith and William Spies; three siblings Lola Goodman, Gordan Spies and Wava Denson; and his great-grandson Alec Chadick.

He is survived by his daughter Deborah (Stephen) Onorofskie of Glenwood Springs, CO; daughter-in-law Royce Spies of Amarillo, TX; daughter-in-law Rose Spies of Borger, TX; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren.

A stranger to none and a friend to all, Dwight will best be remembered for his kind heart, his great stories and sense of humor. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at the Veterans Community Living Center in Rifle, CO who treated Dwight with love and care for the past nine months while he resided there. The family suggests memorials be to one’s favorite charity.
