Shelly Dawn (Melton) Long, 46 year old rural Vinita resident, died early Sunday March 3, 2013 in an automobile accident.

She was born on September 4, 1966 in Vinita to Carrel “Deek” and Carolyn (Smith) Melton. Shelly attended school in Bluejacket graduating in 1984, she then attended cosmetology school at the Northeast Area Vo-Tech in Afton. She married Bobby L. Long on March 9, 1990 in Miami, Oklahoma. She was employed by the Oklahoma Forensic Center in Vinita as a personal grooming specialist. Shelly was a former Will Rogers Rodeo Queen in 1983 and was the rookie of the year in the ACRA that year as well in barrel racing. She has continued being involved with the Will Rogers Queen Contest for many years, serving in many capacities and as well as its director. Shelly was active with the CCYRA, riding horses, photography, most of all she enjoyed being with her husband, children, grandchildren and entire family.

The family includes; her husband Bobby Long of the home; father, Carrel “Deek” Melton of Vinita; sons, Casey “Bronc” Smith, Ty Smith and wife Erica, Nolan Long, all of Vinita; grandchildren, Myka Jo and Hayden Layne Smith; sister Rhonda Lucas and husband Tim of Miami; mother in-law, Virginia Long of Vinita; seven nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were her mother Carolyn Melton in 1993, step-mother Patricia Melton in 2008, father in-law Glenn Long in 2001, and her grandparents.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 6, 2013, from 6-8 p.m. at the Luginbuel Chapel.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, March 7, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at the Bluejacket Gymnasium, in Bluejacket, Oklahoma, with Rev. Ralph Heiney officiating. Interment will follow at the Bluejacket Cemetery. Friends may give to the Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo Queen Contest, C/O Dale Peace Post #40 American Legion, P. O. Box 373, Vinita, Oklahoma 74301.
